I see. I thought you were using coup more conventionally, as an illegal act to take over, not something that personally feels like a coup.

And saying "you all" is really inappropriate here. Your sweeping generalizations don't match my thought processes.
Marcus, I get that metaphor has never been your strong suit. And I know you will keep reminding me of this every time you presume to lecture me after taking my use of metaphor literally. Here's one more thing: I don't have to speak to your personal thought processes whenever I make a comment on this board, even in a comment that does partly respond to something you wrote. And, yes, I was not just responding to you alone.

Yes, it is so fun to have the grimly serious brigades of both the GOP and DNC insist on reducing language to its narrowest, most literal sense so they beat each other up with it.

"Someone called it a coup! We must take this literally if we can get some mileage out of it!"

"How dare you call it a coup! It was not an illegal take over of our democratic system! You can only use the word literally and when it fits in that literal sense. Otherwise, do not use the word!"

Me: "Eff off and chill out."
Why do you double down on everything? You know as well as anyone that ‘thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought.’ Words matter. That’s how we communicate concepts and intent. What happened within the DNC wasn’t a coup.

I usually don't read K's responses to me unless they are quoted because almost without exception he loses his mind and attacks viciously, and of course, this was no exception. Once he melts down, his ability to respond logically is severely degraded. He really, really cannot handle being disagreed with!

His personal attacks are at times so over the top and inappropriate that all one can do is laugh.

Sure it was. It was a kind of coup. In terms of setting aside the votes of all of those members of the Democratic Party who voted for Joe Biden to be their nominee for the presidential race, it was a coup. Yes, words do matter. And the ability to see beyond Merriam Webster matters. No one would be squawking about the use of the term coup in another similar context. It is the overwrought emotions of the two sides that make this into a phony big deal. Not everyone needs to play along. It takes two sides of a discussion to sustain it. Think about that next time you continue an argument and accuse the other person of doubling down. You could also just say, "I disagree," and move on.

Oh, so you DO get metaphors, at least when you want to use them against others. LOL.

I generally handle being disagreed with just fine. I do notice that others, like you, start to freak out when I continue disagreeing.

You probably typed that with a straight face. Wow.

Yes, if I have to repeat the sense in which I use the term to help you understand what I am saying, I will do so. I have yet to read a good argument for why I should not do so. If you want to share one, feel free. I am waiting.

It wasn’t a coup because what the DNC did wasn’t illegal or violent. Also, Joe Biden stepped down. Perhaps there was time to run another Primary and Presidential Campaign - Lord knows I wish all campaigns and campaigning would have one month to get it done - but nothing that happened was illegal.

Did it violate the spirit of democracy? Maybe for the people who elected Democratic reps who get to go to the DNC to vote for their preferred candidate, but I didn’t see much, if any, grumbling by them. I grumbled a bit, but considering the state of Biden and his ability to beat Trump, I was opened-minded to a shift in strategy.

Can you at least cop to hyperbole?

Gladly. I accept that my unhappiness with the DNC pushes me to describe their actions in ways that others find overly dramatic. Maybe they are. But I really don’t like our two-party system.
