Honorentheos:

Blackpink, a 4-member Korean girl group, just got onstage. I don't know much about them, but they're a bit "harder" than Perfume. Maybe they'll be more to your liking.

I watched portions of the Summersonic broadcast including rebroadcasts off and on starting on Friday after you had posted and I checked out the line-up on the website. It looked like it was on par with Coachella in terms of the diversity and scope of music, but at two locations (Tokyo and Osaka) and something like a dozen different stages in total. That's insanely huge. And I heard acts I hadn't heard of before that I enjoyed, one I am planning on catching when she comes here to Phoenix. (Tash Sultana) There were acts I had seen live before, in some chases multiple times (Rancid, Weezer, Chainsmokers, the Red Hot Chili Peppers for example), bands I like a lot but haven't seen live (MGMT and Disclosure being examples), many I'd heard of but not listened to that surprised me (most surprising was Machine Gun Kelly and his ability to own a stage. I had never listened to his music before but might now) and found the variety of Japanese acts pretty cool. Loudness, an old 80's metal band from Japan was kinda awesome. I'd probably go to see them live. I missed BABYMETAL because sleep but they were an act I had been introduced to years ago as a bit of a joke that grew on me to where I listen to them on occasion unironically. “F” whomever says anything about that. I like a lot of different music genres and appreciate artists in just about every genre. I don't really care about Perfume musically, one way or the other. I think I had anticipated they would have harder drops given some of what has been said about them and it didn't fulfill my expectation but that's not a big deal. I just really didn't like that performance at all. Yuck. It made me imagine some Disney Channel fabricated act getting combined in a mad scientist machine with a toddler cartoon. I had flashbacks to when my daughter was pre-school aged and watched shows that constantly asked kids stupid questions like, "Can you see the mountain?" when it's right behind them. The high-pitched, syrupy voice made it worse.

I think I'll have to look up some of those bands you mentioned on YouTube, especially this "Tash Sultana" since they were good enough for you to decide to see them live.

But as for the "high-pitched, syrupy voice" of which you speak, guess what? That's A-chan's natural voice. It's not an act; she always sounds like that.

ANYWAY, for all of you who missed Perfume's performance last night, a Chinese website (of course) helpfully captured it and put it online for our viewing pleasure. See:

Sadist.

It's always a matter of taste. She reminded me a bit of Ani Defranco and other singer-songwriters who used their talent and some pretty creative use of pedals to create solo multi-instrument performances. Maybe more like Tim Reynolds? Anyway, there's a certain appreciation for her craft as much as the music. Her voice also was captivating. I also wouldn't attribute too much to my going to see someone live. I try to see live acts often, and the venue she's coming to is a nice smallish sized place that is perfect for catching someone new. I'd rather go see a few $20-$40 acts than one $100 act in a month, though I do both more than I probably should. What can I say? I like live music.

But as for the "high-pitched, syrupy voice" of which you speak, guess what? That's A-chan's natural voice. It's not an act; she always sounds like that.

Never doubted that. It's possibly an asset for their music or something to someone I guess. In the context of playing a version of Dora the Explorer to an arena of people at a music fest it was decided not. in my opinion of course.

honorentheos wrote:“F” that. This official board band stuff is BS. That was blech. I'm entitled to have an informed opinion and express it. That was some special kind of awful.

I can't relate to anything in this post at all.

All hail Perfume, our overlords. I listened to the first minute of the first song and my subjugation is complete.

Turn it off! Turn it off! I'll do anything you want! Please... just turn it off!

I checked out the link and it mercifully ended after the first song. What happened next leading into the second song was...ugh. I guess whomever edited the video kinda knows that, too.

??? It did NOT end after the first song, and nothing happened "leading into the second song." There was a seamless transition between Song 1 and Song 2 with no narration or time lost.

Are you sure you clicked on the link I provided?

EDITED TO ADD: It turns out that I caught some of Tash Sultana during an earlier part of the live stream, too. . . I just didn't know the name of the person who was performing.

Hmmm
The link sends me to a six minute video that was the start of the live broadcast. The song starts right around minute 3 and that's it. There are links to other longer videos but my phone says they aren't safe because the Chinese want to damage my computer if I click on them. I figure that's good enough for me.

Now, it's very possible I misremembered when the Happy! thing occurred. Maybe it was between song two and three.

In that case, click the link I provided using a desktop computer, not your phone. You won't have any problems.

I've seen it before and that was sufficient, thank you. Besides, this fan video of BABYMETAL performing Pa Pa Ya is more fun...https://youtu.be/X0-AUTU46iM

That's fun crowd energy, there.
