If it's legitimate to push the dubious story about Haitian immigrants eating pets in Springfield without checking hard to see whether it was true, then it must be legitimate to push the dubious story of Vance having sex with sofas without checking to see whether it was true.

If the justification for pushing the pet-eating story was that it focused attention on an issue of real concern to real voters, then that justification also applies to the sofa-sex story. Perhaps real voters are really concerned that new immigrants may be causing them problems by doing desperate things. Real voters are also really concerned that the Republican candidate for Vice President may be hypocritical and weird. The sofa-sex story focuses attention on that genuine and legitimate issue, whether or not it is true. So if issue-focusing justifies spreading a story regardless of truth, then Vance can't complain about sofa-sex innuendos. They're just focusing attention on a legitimate issue.

The difference remains that in Vance's pet-eating story it's a lot of poor Haitian immigrants who are getting smeared by a ridiculous story that nobody properly checked, while in the sofa-sex story it's only one candidate for public office being libeled. As a candidate he has to accept criticism and scrutiny, even satire and mockery. He's supposed to have thick skin for that kind of thing, and stick up for himself. He's not supposed to punch down at a lot of hard-working people who can't defend themselves.
