I used to have pretty much the same opinion.dantana wrote: ↑Sat Mar 22, 2025 12:35 pmWell, I haven't said anything stupid on here in a while so, let me try. We've all heard the adage - those who can, do; those who can't, teach. And, of coarse everyone knows that the only reason country bands are country is because they flunked out as rockers. Similarly, I've always held the opinion that the only reason that anything besides realism in painting types exists is because some artists lack the skills to do realism.

Re: Art.....
If you can de-mystify the technique, you'll tend to have a much better outcome, in my opinion.
Yes. Much.In woodworking and metal working I can see, in my mind, in three D, ahead of time what I am going to create. I think maybe if I approach it as a photo that I am taking, I can see in my mind on how to express the "image" in a collective three D perspective.
Is that closer to your thought?

Right or wrong I feel the same way in regard to art. Which is why I take the art of a Picasso with much respect, When a painter can paint a portrait, landscape, or imaginary scene realistically; then paint a wild abstract piece, then it seems to carry more respect, in my unqualified opinion.dantana wrote: ↑Sat Mar 22, 2025 12:35 pmWell, I haven't said anything stupid on here in a while so, let me try. Piet Mondrian as an example....

In regard to Country music vs Rock....I am going to start a thread on it. That will be fun, I hope.

I'm going to stand by my opening qualifier. The post was simple minded. In regards to the art part that is.Morley wrote: ↑Sat Mar 22, 2025 2:26 pmI used to have pretty much the same opinion.dantana wrote: ↑Sat Mar 22, 2025 12:35 pmWell, I haven't said anything stupid on here in a while so, let me try. I blame it on my dad. He was an accomplished artist. He felt the gold standard was realism in oil. Oil being perhaps the most difficult when shooting for realism. His perspectives were always spot on, and his water colors, pen and inks, etc. were great. He could never really get his - Winslow Homer on in the oils though.

Meh. That's like saying the only reason authors resort to poetry is that they can't write true crime.

[Dantana, I know that you're sort of kidding but, for the sake of discussion, I'm going to respond like this is a serious argument.]
How do you explain Gerhard Richter, then? He paints both

Gerhard Richter, Betty, 1988
and

Gerhard Richter, 946-3 Abstract Painting (2016)
edited to add painting attributions

Re: Art.....
One might add that Gerhard Richter is an example included on page 5 of expensive abstract art.

There's no way anyone valued those "paintings" that much.Everybody Wang Chung wrote: ↑Wed Mar 19, 2025 6:27 pmThis art piece by Barnett Newman sold for 43.8 million:
