I wouldn’t return calls from the guy, either.

This is a good point to a point....the whole idea of "women's rights" implies exclusivity, it implies inequality as in there are some things that this group gets that other groups can not have. And while we can dissect that notion a number of different ways, "women's rights" has become a means to create a broader exclusion, which eventually meets a critical mass of "excessive". Kinda like how Ebonics was just a little too far. And now we see (ironically) "women's rights" trying to envelope a sense of justice not seen since the lynch mobs of yesteryear...A woman's right to have the justice system assume guilt and dismiss due process simply because "a woman should always be believed". The event with Dr Ford illustrated the absurd proportion at which "women's rights" had grown...a free society has people's rights....equality should not have rights just for gays, just for rich guys, just for redheads.

(please, split hairs elsewhere - it is painfully obvious that my use of "rights" here is a sense of liberty and not of regulation)

No one likes abortion, but it would be refreshing if the Religious Right would educate themselves on the issue. They don't even believe their own BS about the sanctity of life because the majority of them are OK with abortion for rape victims and incest.

Almost all abortions happen before the second trimester and only a tiny fraction happen in the third trimester. If fetuses dying in the womb is "murder" or being "killed" then how do we explain the fact that 80% of all abortions come in the form of miscarriage? I guess since this happens due to no decision on the part of the Mom, I guess God decided to kill these tens of millions of babies.

It's worse. A very large number of fertilised ova don't even get to implant. So they die, human soul and all, without even getting to first base ...

So why don't they get a funeral?

At the very least, they should put the stick they peed on to tell them they were pregnant in a scrap book, memorializing the zygote.

But Republicans are better skilled at this sort of branding, and they’ve co-opted the Democratic effort to expose Kav’s behavior and turned that around to make it more relatable (as in the, “I like beer” monologue). The addition of the ‘angry’ angle has always had strong appeal to the deepest part of the Republican Base who have been convinced by the the party strategists that they’ve been marginalized, ignored and disrespected in favor of brown and gay folks, by The Mainstream Media etc. This was in evidence both with Kav and as seen with Graham’s opening remarks.

I made the edit above to, in my opinion only, identify their source of outrage. They're constantly being told what they are, ie, bigoted-racist-sexist, when in reality I would say most Conservatives are just more traditionalists that are concerned with jobs. Getting hammered daily by a party that openly advocates, in their minds, deviancy and then judged for not accepting it just pisses them off. If I had to guess they're more live and let live, on a low-key vibe, than they're given credit for. This is why the Fake News angle resonates with them because they're not given any sense of nuance, and are just painted in the worst possible way in what feels like all the time.

Coupla thoughts on this.

First, I believe that the complaint about this marginalization should be looked at more closely and honestly. I don’t see the so-called mainstream media doing this behavior so much as I see it being accused of doing so by the alternate mainstream media - that being Fox, and other right-wing-preferred radio and cable programming, which really needs to be sized up as the mainstream media of choice for the subset of the population we’re talking about. And those sources drive that persecution narrative by continually drumming into the minds of its audience that this persecution is happening even when it isn’t. As example, the other night Tucker Carlson ranted on and on about how ‘the Left’ was supposedly turning the Kavanaugh hearings into an issue of race. How they’ll use it to initiate a race war after the midterms, etc., playing to that white marginalization, disrespect and fear aspect. Not that such a thing is actually happening within any legitimate portion of the supposedly leftist mainstream media, but Tucker, Fox et al know that they can essentially lead this sort of continual black ops campaign and their audience will lap it up and build it into their victimization claims.

The other part of the picture is that while maybe most folks on the right might tend to the ‘live and let live’ side of things as you state, that there’s a surprisingly effective number within the group that is quite active in imposing their own sense of order on the rest of society via their preferred legislation. And unlike the weird sort of accommodation-style stuff pushed for by the Left that seeks to demand additional ‘options’ (gender neutral bathrooms in addition to regulator bathrooms, as example), the conservative side of the political fence seems to be keen on removing them as much as possible. There’s an important difference in there as to how how the ‘live and let live’ philosophy claimed by conservatives actually plays out.

I won’t even speak to the idea of conservatives feeling as if they need to reign in anyone else’s deviancy, lol. But that, too, goes hand in hand with the above.

EAllusion wrote:Dude. Citizens United is talked about constantly in center-left circles.

I doubt most Americans know what citizens united is.

Now google "citizens united" site:https://www.cnn.com you only get 730 results.
With "Roe v Wade" site:https://www.cnn.com you get 2,840 results.
with"Wade" site:https://www.cnn.com you get 6,550 results.
and with "abortion" site:https://www.cnn.com you get 16,100 results.

EAllusion wrote:I guess no matter how extreme a law is, you can always point to something more extreme. But there is real risk of states having laws that outlaw abortion in virtually all cases and prescribe serious criminal penalties for women or providers who violate the law. For a large number of women, abortion will no longer be a viable choice and this will have very significant consequences for them individually and for society. Having looked it up, something on the order of 1 out of every 2 women below the poverty line have an abortion in their lifetime. Imagine the social consequences if those decisions weren't allowed. I'm not asking you to think about whether you agree or disagree. Just imagine the impact. Now imagine if every one of those abortions was as immoral killing. Abortion is quite rightly thought of as a hugely consequential issue.

I do believe abortion should be legal in all circumstances, but less than 1/3 of American are entirely pro-choice.

DoubtingThomas wrote:"Americans with more absolute positions tend to come down on the side of abortion being legal under any circumstances (29%) than being illegal in all circumstances (18%)."

Holy crap, it just keeps getting worse for "BART" Kavanaugh.

They got a copy of a Georgetown preparation's newspaper written in part by Mark Judge, referring to Holton-Arms girls as "hosebags." (it refers to sexually "loose" girls) Christine Blasey Ford was a student there.

Also, a letter from 1983 written by Brett Kavanaugh signed "Bart." Remember he was asked under oath if he was Bart Kavanaugh and he said the Senator would have to ask Mark Judge that, implying he had no idea. Obviously he did. Just another friggin lie. No wonder McConnell wanted to cram this through before further investigation.

"During some of the time we were dating, Dr. Ford lived with Monica L. McLean, who I understood to be be her life-long best friend," the ex-boyfriend, whose name was redacted from the statement he gave to the Senate, wrote. "During that time, it was my understanding that McLean was interviewing for jobs with the FBI and U.S. Attorney's Office."

"I witnessed Dr. Ford help McLean prepare for a potential polygraph exam," he said. "Dr. Ford explained in detail what to expect, how polygraphs worked, and helped McLean become familiar and less nervous about the exam."

Davis notes that Rachel Mitchell asked about precisely this during Blasey's testimony -- and she denied ever having even given "tips" about taking a polygraph.

"Have you ever had discussions with anyone, beside your attorneys, on how to take a polygraph?" Mitchell asked.

"Never," Ford responded.

"And I don’t just mean countermeasures,” Mitchell said, "but I mean just any sort of tips, or anything like that."

"No," Ford said.

"[H]ave you ever given tips or advice to somebody who was looking to take a polygraph test?" Mitchell continued.

"Never," Ford replied again.
