Jersey Girl’s got it. I love penstemon; they don’t have an especially long blooming period but they have great form and variety.

You mentioned Russian Sage, in your previous post. I think that we’ve been won over by these. An initial concern was about how large they can get, but in the right spot, their toughness and bloom will be appreciated. We may end up with some making in into the garden this year.

canpakes do you feed them anything? This summer I tried using worm castings in our flower bed and whoosh! Going to use it again next year!
Actually, I want to, but have to restrain myself. : D

A nitrogen-heavy fertilizer can cause more leafy green growth as opposed to flowers, and is reported to shorten the lifespan of penstemon.

I’ve occasionally applied a fertilizer that’s proportionally heavier with either/both phosphorus or potassium, though, as those (especially the former) help with overall health and support flower production.

We got loads of penstemon from that program I linked, and ended up planting them beneath our roof’s drip line to make use of the free water. We’ll see how it goes since they’re buried underneath all the snow that is sloughing off; In other words, I don’t if it’ll be too wet for them to be happy, or if they’ll blow up. I had one firecracker penstemon I picked up on a whim and planted back in SLC just to see what would happen, and it was cagey as to whether it wanted to be showy one year or look half dead.

FYI, if you get Russian sage be advised it’ll send out a ton of runners. If you don’t mind pulling or digging out runners then yeah, it’s a showy plant that the bees love. Of all my plants, it was he Russian sage that’d get hundreds of bees any given day.

Thanks; this is good information to know. Though, we’ve been well-trained by the aspens about root suckers, so we’ll be ready for whatever the Sage dishes out.

The new print that I ordered that began this thread arrived today. That was 12 days time to delivery. It is JUST as attractive as it looks on the website!

I'm giving this company a 5 stars rating. :D

Now … try to redo it yourself, with watercolors.

This will be good practice.
