Best video game endings...
I broke the rules yesterday. I played a video game -- I promised I wouldn't as long as I was on this sabbatical, but this one gained an exception based on the "awesome" rule. What game you ask?
PORTAL!
Trailer:

This game kicked so much ass, but it was short. I beat it yesterday, and it had, by far, one of the best video game endings I've ever seen.
***Spoiler alert***
Throughout the game, the computerized voice is constantly referring to a cake that you will be getting at the end of the test, as some sort of goal for completing it. Well, after the test, you learn that the cake is a lie, and she was trying to kill you. Eventually, you portal your way to her and destroy her. After you escape the building, you see this:

Best song EVER. I can't stop listening to it!
***End Spoiler***
I know we have a bunch of video game nerds hiding on this board -- What are your favorite game endings?

Final Fantasy X (Cute)
Original NES Ghosts & Goblins (not because the ending was good but because I've never met anyone else who has done it without cheating)
Final Fantasy Tactics (beautifully messed up)
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines (also messed up)
Ogre Battle (got the good ending where you don't die)
Actraiser (I have no idea why I like that one)
Warcraft III (Great Battle, Great Explosion)
Knights of the Old Republic (I get to rule the galaxy with an iron fist....HOOORAY!)
Baldur's Gate Trilogy (Deification is always fun....especially as the God of Murder)

FFX? Seriously? I was so pissed off at that ending. Mostly 'cause I was pissed off at the entire game, and the ending was like a crap cherry on top of a giant crap cake. FFIX was awesome, which just makes FFX all the more disappointing.

Haven't played these. I'm so ashamed.
Actraiser (I have no idea why I like that one)
That game was just so weird, but addictive. It didn't seem to make much sense at all, but it was just fun.
Warcraft III (Great Battle, Great Explosion)
I always felt the warcraft endings left too much hanging in the air, but at least they did the sequals. The entire time I played WoW, I felt like I was just getting closure on W3
Knights of the Old Republic (I get to rule the galaxy with an iron fist....HOOORAY!)
Baldur's Gate Trilogy (Deification is always fun....especially as the God of Murder)
I've never liked any of the AD&D style games. Not sure why, but I always got so bored right at the beginning, I never felt like getting past the first few quests.

I didn't like the FFIX ending. I think there was a disconnect in it because I quit playing near the end and couldn't get back for a month.
I do admit that anyone who is not ashamed to be sitting through the FFX 'laughing' scene should be shot on general principles.
I'm going to say that Ghosts & Goblins guy was using an emulator with save states....CHEATER!!!!! There, now I'm still unique :) My brother and I got out the old NES 2 Christmas's ago while at our parent's house and decided we would sit down and beat the first game we'd ever played. We started at 5 pm. I finished at 4 am. He was almost there when the Nintendo shut down (as such old things tend to do).
I recommend the Vampire game. Uses a good engine. The gameplay is nothing to write home about but the storyline and characters are great fun.

Actually, on the speed demos archive, all the games must be played on the original system in order to qualify. There's other sites for save-state games, and they're usually much faster, but I find it much more entertaining to watch the live versions.

I'm playing EverQuest 2 right now (BlackBurrow, Hollan). But I'm working my way through BioShock. Being a long time gamer (PC only), I've got over 200 games going back years.
Valve's new Portals game looks interesting. As I watched it, I couldn't help but be drawn back to my days of programming my game Morabis (see http://www.google.com/search?q=morabis. With the script editor, you could create an object type=door and place it in any area of the dungeon. If you didn't use the parameter carriable=false, a person could pick the door up. Once picked up, the person could drop that door anywhere and walk through it, connecting to wherever the door went. Of course, they couldn't get back but still a similar concept.
I hate console gaming. For my kids I nabbed the NES, SNES, N64 and MAME emulators and have everything ever made. That gives them roughly 4000 games to work through until they're old enough to want a WII or whatever is next.
/hugeass gamer here.

Site down due to bandwidth limitations! *weeps*
I've been wanting to play Bioshock, but that one will have to wait until after the sabbatical. I'm also going to miss out on assassins creed, which makes me weep giant tears.
