Sometimes paranoid is okay.
Take a look at this recent article in Slate.com about a secret directive from the president that could conceivably allow the president and vice-president to stage a coup:

I'd like to think that it would never come into play, but the fact that it exists and parts are hidden even from those in Congress that have the highest security clearance is cause for concern, if only because of the principle involved.
