Gardening
Anyone else gardening?
I'm planting strawberries this year for the first time. I bought some strawberry pots and the kids are rather excited about it -- strawberry shortcake! I'm trying asparagus for the first time this year in my vegetable garden, too. I will be doing my peppers, squash and tomatoes (yum!) like I do every year. I've fed my roses and can't wait to see what my rose bushes produce this year. Last year they were spectacular and were even in full bloom early last November! My tulips are still blooming and more and more daffodils are opening up each day. I can't wait for my Iris to start blooming. My dogwood is in full bloom, too!
I'm so glad it's Spring!

Gardening? Not yet. Here, we cannot plant in the ground until around May 15th due to chances of snow. I've experimented with a variety of plants at this altitude and have learned what works/what doesn't and also not to plant much in the way of unprotected beds because it hails like all hail here in summer.
So...Sweet Williams, Lillies grow like demons here (!), Pansies and fill in the flower beds with annuals like Petunias and such. Hanging baskets around the decks...Petunias and Ivy Geranium do well. Cosmos in the whiskey barrels.
I miss living in a climate where I could have lush vegetable and flower gardens!
p.s. I would kill for dogwood trees!

Woops! I almost forgot. Our property is filled with wildflowers in summer so we're not totally devoid of flowering plants here!
Wild Geranium
Wild Roses
Butter and Eggs
Columbine
Indian Paintbrush
Queen Anne's Lace
Lambert's Loco
Black Eyed Susan's
Pentstemmon
Harebells
Just off the top of my head...

Just at the outside chance that no tree pruning expert shows up on this thread, try this:
http://www.marthastewart.com/
and search on tree pruning.
It's Martha. She knows everything.

Scottie, you can find out about anything on the internet!! :)
I love wildflowers, Jersey Girl! How lucky are you!
I too like Petunias. I have 2 hibiscus in pots that I put on my front porch each year. I have ferns I hang from my porch too - I keep them in my basement during the cold months and I think I'll hang them up this week. My hostas are coming up, too. I can't believe how screwy my flowers blooming has been this year... I mean, I can't believe I still have daffodils blooming. Last year we had a late snap and lots of my flowers died and it's nice to see everything so green and the color peeking out.
Pansies are marvelous! I used to do big pots of them but haven't the last few years. I got sort of creative last year and placed some urns on my front step and filled them with that spikey grass (I can't recall the name of it) and just filled in about it with petunias - it was pretty and I might do that again this year. Not sure. We'll see when I go to the nursery!

Wildflowers are in abundance where I live and I never get tired of walking the property to look at them and pick them. Columbines never fail to amaze me. During summer, I ususally have fresh picked wildflowers in the house. So far as gardening goes, some years I go all out and can't stay away from the garden centers (I could buy every pansy that exists and more) and other years, I just go miminalist and have a few pots on the decks. I force feed Miracle Gro to everything and watch it pop!
This summer, I have no idea what I'll do. It's hard to drum up enthusiasm when growing season is a month away!

I just planted a couple of beds of petunias and marigolds. And added some pink african daisies outside my kitchen window. My azaleas in my front courtyard have exploded with flowers just this week, and the lilies in my back yard are starting to flower. My gladiolas are pushing up, so we should see something purty from them in a little while. I'm waiting for my red chrysanthemums to bloom - should be in a few weeks. My first roses popped out this week, too. I loooove my flowers.
I'm considering planting some tomato plants in containers on the patio - I love fresh tomatoes.
Me and my girls will go out tomorrow (if the littlest one isn't too sick) to plant some sunflower plant seeds and a few other flowers from seeds in their little garden patch.
So yeah, count me in as one who likes to play in the dirt.

I may be going to hell in a bucket, babe / But at least I'm enjoying the ride.
