Okay -- so it's not so serious -- yet, it is quite aggravating!

I have fire alarms in my house that are hooked up electrically as well as having batteries in them. So, the one right outside my bedroom is beeping like mad and has been for a good 24 hours. It is increasingly beeping at faster intervals.... I unhooked it from the ceiling and took the battery out (no new battery to put in it -- since, well, I need to go buy some!) and it's still hooked up to the electrical and STILL beeping. There's a button that I've pushed (it says to do that!) and no success. I can't quite unhook it from the electrical 'cause I'm afraid I will electrocute myself with my children sleeping -- that's not wise, I think!!!!


I've swatted it a few times -- nothing successful came of that!

Oh, shoot. Anyone know what to do with these things? Do I need a new battery even though it's still hooked up to the electrical?

I bet Gaz could help you on this one but in the mean time, sounds like a 9 volt battery. Can you take one out of some other thing and put it in the smoke detector?

Oh, you're right -- the proper name is smoke detector... :)

Well, I considered that... yet, the one I take it out of might beep, as well. Yet, I could see if I could take it out of the kitchen one... might not hear that one...

I'll give that a try. I actually considered just cutting off my electricity it is so maddening!

No, you misunderstand me. Do you have another appliance or some such thing that uses a 9 volt you could take out and use?

p.s. I HATE IT WHEN THEY DO THAT!!!

Oh, I have no clue! Perhaps one of the kids toys? Oh sheesh. What a pain in the ass!

So, you think putting a new battery in it will solve the problem? If that's the case WHY in the world is it even hooked up to the electrical? That is sooo pointless.

I would say that you need a new one. Maybe its the battery, but it sounds to me like an internal short. You can unhook the electrical as a temporary solution by just unscrewing one side of the connection. As long as the two wires don't touch each other your fine. After unscrewing one side, stick some tape over the end.

When the stores open just go get a new one and replace it, they are fairly cheap and easy to install.

Oh, this is bad.

I figured out how to unhook it from the ceiling (a quick yank) and it was STILL beeping -- no battery and not hooked up to the electrical. So, I took it outside and hope my neighbors won't hate me.

Now they are ALLLLL beeping!
