How do you write?

Greetings all. Just finished another one of those lovely college papers and the thought occurred to me that I do my best writing, when I'm not writing. It's when I'm driving or working. The best prose I ever come up with springs into my head when I'm away from the computer. Most of my notes are written on the backs of pieces of paper willy-nilly, and the first draft is usually the only one for me, because all the roughing goes on on paper or in my head.

So how do you guys write [alot of you are writers after all]. Do you sit at the computer and do it, do you do it by hand, do you do do it by voice onto recording devices?

~Just a topic.

Dude, PLEASE do not write when you're driving. You need to stay 100% focused on the road, with your hands on the wheel.

So how do you guys write [alot of you are writers after all].

With my hands. :-)

When I write anything serious or important, it's usually by hand. I'm obsessive about felt tip pens.

I just start writing. 50% or more of it is crap and is discarded. Then you rewrite it again. 50% of that is crap. Continue until percentage of crap is sufficiently low.

In college my procedure was start the project (including research) the night before or morning it is due. Write until I'm half mad worried about getting it done. Either genius then starts or I just think it does. I write and write until it is done. Turn in paper. Crash. Since I mostly got A's and B's I think at least part of it actually was genius.

I use a computer. The only exception is when I'm writing fiction or humor and then sometimes I use pen and paper.

Bar napkins usually. Once in a while I'll remember to bring a notebook along though. Don't really use the 'puter much.

I take notes, lots of notes. I have notebooks for different projects, classes, etc. I also use my laptop for notes when I'm working in an archive or transcribing something.

When it comes to writing though, I do it all on the computer. It's so much easier to manipulate text than in longhand. I often cannibalize other things for current projects, and that's a whole lot easier to do digitally as well.

I'm not clear on what type of writing your'e talking about, B23. How I write depends on the writing itself. If I'm doing a research paper, I work with references scattered all over the floor. When doing developmental assessments, I'm extremely methodical in that I automatically go through a series of developmental traits/abilities/milestones/sequences. For lectures, I typically have a series of messages to convey and work with those referencing theorists/research studies...depends on what it is. If I'm witing say, an essay or journalistic type piece, it just comes spontaneously and I almost never change a word of it.

I had a couple of things on my blog (that's still locked) and then took them down. If you like, I can send you a sample and you can see how werid I REALLY am!

The only time I ever seem to use pen and paper is either to write a check, make a grocery list or jot down a telephone number. Does it show?

I write while in the morning and while I listen to music with good Lyrics..

Read my blog By the People for the People on the Frederick news post.

I'm a citizen blogger...One semester in college I wrote 25 or 26 papers in a 15 week semester..and one class was an honors class..I graduated from FCC in 2006 with a 3.8 grade point average and averaged 5 classes per semester.

I need to finish so I can become a better blogger?
