Must Admit: My Opinion of McCain Went Up Tonight

I saw coverage of McCain defending Obama at a rally today when a woman called him an Arab. McCain said no, although disagrees with Obama on some fundamental issues, he's a decent man. He also told another man that he didn't need to be afraid of Obama (for being a terrorist?) as president of the US (and was met with a chorus of boos at his own rally). He then said that he (McCain) was running because he thinks he'd be a much better president.
I really respected that. Three observations about this:
- Where was this McCain the last few months? Had he been this kind of guy all along, like he's reputed to be in his career, the polls might be showing something very different these days.
- It's too bad his campaign staff isn't on board. They're still running mudslinging campaign commercials about his ties to a terrorist from the 60's, and Palin still talks about it. Maybe they should read their memos.
- It just goes to show that even McCain realizes that there is a fever pitch republicans are reaching that's way out of control and showing just how desperate they are. Some people around here could learn something from him.
Anyway, good on McCain. He gave me a reason to feel not as bad should he pull out a come from behind victory (well, assuming he lives the full term).
