Halloween Movies '08

Halloween is my favorite time of year, the cooling weather, the smell of decaying leaves, pumpkin carving, costumes, candy, and scary movies. I love horror movies. I'll watch anything. A few of my favorites when I was kid were Poltergeist, Watcher in the Woods, and Lady in White. My parents were pretty strict about what we could watch but when I spent the night at my friend's house (he had HBO), I also saw some movies that I probably shouldn't have that made me into the horror afficionado that I am today: Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and The Exorcist. This year, the pickings seem slim at the theater. I don't care much for the Saw movies, so Saw V is a no go. I think there's a remake of Friday the 13th, but it's by Michael Bay's company, Platinum Dunes, the same company that remade The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Hitcher, so I don't really care to see it. I saw Quarantine last Thursday and while it had some cool moments and some interesting ideas, it didn't do a whole lot for me. I'm going to watch the old Phantasm movies this year and look for some Argento movies that I haven't seen yet (Suspiria is a masterpiece).

What are you guys going to be watching this year? What are some of your favorites? I really don't care what McCain/Palin or Obama/Biden watch for Halloween or what they endorse, so let's keep the politics out of this thread unless it involves a chainsaw cutting the candidates up or a zombie tearing their collective flesh. Did you ever see the first Saw? I'm not into horror movies, but I thought the original Saw was a damn fine show, definitely the best horror film I've ever seen. That's because, unlike most horror shows, it didn't insult the viewers' intelligence. It was actually quite smart.

Saturday night, my wife and I watched Vacancy with Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale. It was scary as Hell, mostly because it was actually plausible. They kept the blood to a minimum, so the thrills were real, not contrived. Another good show.

So, when it comes to horror movies, those are probably my two favorite.

I hope this isn't off topic, but what about haunted houses? I've been in some that were pretty fun and some that were rather lame. In one I was scared enough by some guy with a chainsaw that I ended up ripping my shirt as it caught on a nail while I was fleeing.

I've seen every Saw movie in the theatre up to this point. I liked the first Saw. It had a low-budget charm and some cool twists. Saw 2 was more hilarious than scary. I wanted all those idiots locked in that house to die. Saw 3 was much better than Saw 2 and pretty damned gory. I enjoyed it a lot. Saw IV jumped the shark, as the kids say. It made little to no sense. The plot line was so confusing that you need a guide book to get through it. That's why I say Saw V is a no go. I may rent it on DVD sometime in the future, but I don't see myself spending 10 bucks on this one in the theatre, unless it gets some really good word of mouth, or I'm really bored and stoned and have nothing else to do.

I thought Vacancy was great. An awesome recommendation, Shades. I saw it in the theatre a while back and it was pretty damn intense. All the loud knocking was really unsettling. I also really liked the performance of the guy (Frank Whaley) who plays the desk clerk. Creepy.

I haven't seen The Strangers yet, but it looks like it could be pretty intense like Vacancy.

I haven't been to one of these live haunted houses since I was involved with putting one on when I was in boy scouts, a long time ago. They're big business in Utah and even here in Colorado. I see advertisements for them in the paper. Maybe I'll go to one this year.

By the way, since I hear that the brain sees love an fear as similar, I wonder if chicks are more likely to hold you close in a horror flick than in a romance flick (the latter are far scarier for me and not in a good way).

I'm going to watch Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer tonight. I've had a couple of Stone IPA's so I'm in the mood. I'll post my thoughts tomorrow if I feel like and if I don't feel like it I won't post crap.

Loved Lady in White. Also The Sixth Sense and The Ring. Dark Water feels like The Ring and the end is suprising.
