I'll have to examine this phenomenon in more detail later. It could be the mutual ties to colonial Britain. While Americans fought the British, the Aussies just preferred to insult them, mainly thorough cricket! Losing the Ashes against the Brits, for Aussies, is like losing a major war. Yet the historical and sentimental ties are still very strong.

Given the way America has a tradition of acting as the world's police force, not to mention the way we've recently seen how the global economy is heavily influenced by what happens in the US, it's absolutely no surprise to me at all that this is big news on a worldwide level.
