The Nods, 2009

I posted this on my blog but figured I'd post it here too, for some discussion.
So, the Oscar nominations came out today. The Nods. The first thing I noticed is that I haven't seen any of the movies in the Best Picture category. Never happened to me before. The second (and most awesome) thing I noticed is that Robert Downey Jr. is nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Tropic Thunder. He'll lose to Heath Ledger, but it's still great that he got some recognition for his amazing role. The third thing I noticed is that Martin McDonagh is nominated for his brilliant original screenplay, In Bruges. At least my favorite film of 2008 got one Nod. Also, good luck to Danny Boyle. I hope he brings home a statue.
Let's discuss, fellow cinephiles.

If Downey Jr. gets a nom for Tropic Thunder, then the movie should have been nominated for best makeup as well. And The Dark Knight doesn't deserve to be relegated to the second-tier tech awards usually reserved for popcorn movies. I expected Best Picture and Best Director nominations as well.
And I hope Marisa Tomei takes it again as a long-shot. Her entire speech would be "Eat it suckas. Now I've got two!"

I totally agree. I wasn't a huge fan of
The Dark Knight the first time I saw it, but the second time I watched it (on BluRay) I appreciated it more. Just the amount of work to get those IMAX shots. Incredible. Nolan's direction is amazing. He got
snubbed.

What really kills me is that "The Dark Knight" is really a product of Nolan's vision and efforts. Certainly, "The Reader", "Frost/Nixon", and "Milk" are great films and well directed, but each could have been great movies with the involvement of another director. But without Nolan, there wouldn't have been "The Dark Knight". And the sheer skill involved in creating it from a narrative and technical standpoint is mind-boggling.
I went to the selection presentation last week where the academy screens 15 minute clips of the 7 films proposed for best VFX, and the VFX guys got 10 minutes to describe their efforts on the film. It was obvious that Nolan was truly pioneering in his technical efforts for TDK, especially his work with the IMAX portions. His vision really crafted every aspect of that film :(
But if Fincher wins, I'll be happy. Yeah "Fight Club" and "The Game" (and Paula Abdul's "Cold Hearted" video)!

Ben Stiller didn't get a nod because he went full retard.
I think that line has served its usefulness.

I hear that in "The Reader," Kate Winslet is naked for the first half of the movie.
Is it out on DVD yet?

That means it will be 45 minutes long when it plays in Provo.
