Last year, while waiting backstage for their turn to perform during the "Kohaku Uta Gassen," the most popular and widely-watched New Year's Eve show in Japan, Perfume apparently played around for the security camera and listened to the countdown, too. The camera picked up sound as well, and some enterprising security guard saved the footage and shared it enough times that it wound up on YouTube. . . at least, that's what looks like happened.

This extremely candid footage is adorable beyond words and encapsulates our Holy Trinity marvelously. Prepare to smile and/or fall in love:

Dear fellow Perfumaniacs:

Today marks the 1-year anniversary of Perfume's most recent concert. It was to be the penultimate performance of their nationwide "dome" tour to commemorate the 15th anniversary of their major debut and the 20th anniversary of their formation as a musical group. It took place in Japan's largest venue, the Tokyo Dome.

Alas, however, the government shut down their concert that was scheduled to happen the next day and in the same venue due to concerns over the coronavirus. Therefore, what everyone thought would be their second-to-last concert turned out to be their last concert (of this particular tour).

Penultimate or not, in true Perfume style it was an epic spectacle that took an army of engineers, laborers, and technical specialists to pull off. . . which they did seamlessly. Please join me in reliving the event by watching the near-two hour concert extravaganza at the following link:

The colorful costumes of PERFUME

Dear fellow Perfume fans,

As you know, the clothing and and costumes worn by Perfume when they perform are an integral facet of the entire Perfume experience itself. As such, their wardrobe is often noted and commented upon.

Recently, a book was published that showed ALL of their costumes from 2005 to 2020, in chronological order of when they were worn. The book can be ordered from Amazon.com at: Perfume COSTUME BOOK 2005-2020. While there, you can see some sample pages. Be warned, though: It's an import, so it's very expensive!

But that's not the bread-and-butter of this post. The point is that some enterprising YouTuber hunted down video clips of ALL of the depicted costumes being worn mid-performance, then arranged them in chronological order, with the page number of the book listed at the bottom of each clip. So, to see ALL the impressive costumes they ever wore from their major debut in 2005 up through and including their T.V. performances during the pandemic--and to hear brief representatives samples of all their music--have a look at:

(Note: In the third clip, A-chan is crying because they had set an attendance record for the venue in which they were performing, small though it was.)

My favorite member is Kashiyuka, not Nocchi. But my guess is that it was a style from early on that somehow arbitrarily stuck. Like a trademark of sorts.

Thanks for watching at least part of it, though!

While they’ll probably never be populating my daily listening mixes, I have to give credit to Perfume for their coordination, both in costume and in dance routine. Especially for the latter, I can appreciate the effort that goes into pulling that off well.

Dr. Shades,

The costumes are definitately part of the fun of their performances. It does look like they tried to have consistent variations within each costume set for each performer. Not always, but mostly. Personally, I don't like the individual styling they often use for Nocchi. But if she likes it -- it's okay by me.

Dear Perfumaniacs:

When they gathered to photograph the cover of their "If You Wanna" single, the three members of Perfume (A-chan, Kashiyuka, and Nocchi) were each given a video camera and allowed to cut loose with them backstage. Someone compiled the footage into six minutes and forty-six seconds of pure, unscripted, unrehearsed cuteness. BONUS: It's all subtitled, so you'll understand everything they say!

If you had any doubts about their adorability before, you won't anymore after watching this. Pay attention to their voices, especially A-chan's. ENJOY:
