Are people buying more lab tops than desktops these days? Would it be wise to sell your desktop and buy a lab top computer?

I suppose it would depend upon your needs and were you want to compute. I imagine wireless or wifi offers a wider range of possibilities as far as venturing away from the desk. One thing I don't care about as far as laptops is how hot they get if you are couch potato computing and the battery running out of power. I say acquire both if you can and have the best of both worlds. Just tap the money tree out in the back yard.
