Or, rather, the presence of large amounts of easily available firearms in a society makes it much more likely that people will get killed, kill other people, or succeed in killing themselves.

I agree that they are technically interesting, and I once got a marksmanship badge. But it was won of those 'Been there, done that, got the T-shirt' things. I much rather have learned to play the piano.
