Sarah Huckabee Sanders Cites Bible As Reason To Detain Immigrant Children

After CNN’s Jim Acosta asked Sanders about Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ claim that separating parents from children is rooted in the Bible, Sanders said that following the law is biblical.

“It is very biblical to enforce the law, that is actually repeated a number of times throughout the Bible,” Sanders said.

But reporters including Acosta reminded Sanders that no one was forcing the administration to hold children captive, and that there is in fact no law forcing it to separate them from their parents.

“Can you imagine the horror these kids must be going through when they come across the border?” Acosta asked. “They’re with their parents and they’re suddenly pulled away from their parents ― why is the government doing this?”

“Because it’s the law and that’s what the law states,” Sanders responded.

“It doesn’t have to be the law. You don’t have to do that,” Acosta said.

On Wednesday, reporters were allowed for the first time to see a Texas facility housing nearly 1,500 immigrant children separated from their parents by the U.S. government. MSNBC reporter Jacob Soboroff said the children ― many of whom have been detained for months ― are essentially in a prison.

“I kid you not, one of the first things an employee of the shelter said to me is, when we walked inside, ‘Can you try to smile at these kids, because it’s weird to see people from the outside.’” Soboroff said on MSNBC. He recalled the employee adding: “They feel like animals locked up in cages being looked at.”

During Thursday’s exchanges, reporter Brian Karem attempted to access Sander’s empathetic side.

When will the media stop spinning this? They're not immigrant children. They're illegal immigrant children. We either have a country or we don"t.

I thought the issue is children being taken from the parents and being put in a jail. Why not detain them with their children? I can only imagine how terrifying it must be for these children who didn't do anything wrong.

When people commit any other crime they're taken away from their children and put in jail. Why should illegal immigration be any different?

And it's still a spin and basically a lie. They deliberately omit that these are illegal immigrants. They call them immigrants and thus equate them to legal immigrants.

Seriously, you cannot see the difference? Most countries, including the US until recently, do not do such things.

Recently a man killed himself as his children were torn from him and a woman who was breastfeeding had her baby taken away. This is pure evil, and if you don't see that then I hope your time on this planet comes to a quick end because the world will be a better place without you.

And asylum seekers are not "criminals" they come here seeking asylum and they're treated the same way, by having their children ripped away from them. And then we lose their children to human traffickers. This isn't a law, it is just a stupid Trump policy designed as s "deterrent" according to Jeff Sessions. Saying this is good because the Bible says to "obey the law" is stupid, evil and is s good reason to outlaw religion. The Bible also says to stone adulterers to death. Trump is a perfect candidate.

How about we stop letting government officials shape policy according to their stupid religious beliefs? Not that she has s biblical leg to stand on anyway.

It's essentially a paperwork violation, not double homicide. You don't get to reap whatever misery you want on a person if they do something that violates a law. Either we have something resembling a just legal system or we have the barbarism you yearn for. This is plainly a serious human rights violation and in a more just world the people responsible for it would be tried at the Hague.

Moreover, this is happening to asylum seekers just the same. They aren't even breaking any law. Asylum seekers aren't "illegal immigrants." The goal is to reap such cruelty upon them that word gets out to stop trying to seek asylum.

The argument being used here, which I think is just a repetition of what Jeff Sessions first said in defense of growing Christian criticism of what's happening to families, can be used for literally anything the government wants to do. And while there probably is a decent argument for Biblical support of both divine right of kings and strict obedience to the state, modern Christians tend to reject that because of its unacceptably monstrous implications. It's also the case that the very people using this argument sure as hell weren't using it when the state was doing things that don't agree with their politics. It's argued in such obvious bad faith.

P.S. And what is happening is unbelievably awful. I'm sure everyone in the thread is exposed to at least some anecdotes of profoundly inhumane actions going on. The mother who allegedly had her infant ripped from her while she was breastfeeding and was cuffed for resisting seems to be getting a lot of circulation.
