One week, America. Do you think you’ve got it in you?

As voters survey their options strewn across the electoral landscape like the rejected remnants of a wedding reception buffet, it's pretty hard to keep an appetite.

We say every two years that the election is the most expensive of its kind and the nastiest. This year has certainly lived down to that expectation.

This is known as the “silly season.” It's the time at the end of every campaign cycle where candidates and campaigns do and say crazy things in an effort to win.

A good rule of thumb is that whoever is acting craziest is the one who thinks he or she is losing.

There's a corollary here: The candidate who brings up social issues first and most aggressively is also generally the one who is losing.

If Republicans felt confident about their chances this year, they would be talking about peace and prosperity and encourage the country to keep a good thing going. Instead, they're talking about whether President Trump can unilaterally revoke birthright citizenship for people born in the United States.

Or, if Claire McCaskill felt secure in keeping her Missouri Senate seat we doubt she would have suddenly adopted new enthusiasm for militarizing the southern border...

"rules of thumb" haven't really ever applied to the Trump era. His presidency has been like his campaign and is much like his treatment of the press where he turn arrogance back upon itself.
Take his current immigration stance, he has a clear policy and the Democrats do not (simply saying "compassion" is not policy)...this is just an example for why the Democrats arent currently experiencing the "blue wave" and why the Democrats arent running away with these mid term elections.
Heck the best the Democrats can do is parade Obama around because they literally have come up with nothing new in 2 years.
But alas, it is the aforementioned arrogance in underestimating Trump's presidency that has been one of the main sources of its success.

If Trump's Presidency was so awesome the Democrats wouldn't be taking the House. That doesn't require a "blue wave" but it is surely a testament to what the people think of his Presidency given the fact that his approval is so low in a good economy.

This guy has it right. Trump is is desperation mode because without control over House and Senate his isn't going to get anything passed. Hell, he couldn't even repeal Obamacare with Republicans controlling both.

I just think its funny that he thinks he's going to find more racists out there to support him who didn't already vote for him the first time. He couldn't get the majority vote in 2016, and he won't get it in 2020 either.

I'm not sure if this is what you are asking but I find fivethirtyeight.com provides good statistical insight with a few detail tidbits. If you click on the seat you are interested in in the maps linked below, you get specific information on that race:

Why Republicans aren't blanketing every race with, "It's the best economy you'll see in your lifetime!" makes for an interesting insight into the state of the US economy as people live in it as opposed to how it is reported. Despite low unemployment, record stock market levels, generally high corporate profit levels, housing prices generally recovered across the nation, etc., etc., the messages Republicans focus on are by and large socially conservative law-and-order messages.

Here in Arizona, one can't turn around without hearing how evil Kyrsten Sinema encouraged people to join the Taliban, hates the US military, and gave illegals a ticker tape parade as they snuck into the country. There's been at least $30 million spent between the two campaigns and the message from McSally hasn't been, "Isn't your life right now pretty good? Why not vote to keep it that way?", while Sinema's is basically, "I'll represent Arizona in a swamp of self-interest regardless of party" which is almost the message one would expect of a Republican in a strong economy led by Republican control of government.

The argument I've heard put forward is that most Americans lives don't reflect the economic statistics. People might see their home values going up, but they aren't feeling secure in their jobs, feel like the rug is about to be pulled out from under them at any moment, and that the tax cuts/trade wars are all affecting things that don't affect their pay grade. The economy is only an effective message if one is talking to people who are tapped into the boom which doesn't overlap the Republican base all that much. In a way, the Republican economic boom we're seeing is an indictment of how much income inequality has undermined the ideas behind conservative economics going back to Reagan.

We live in weird times.

The Missouri Senate race is a dead heat, and I have no idea who is going to win that race. I am hoping that Clair McCaskill wins that race.

Immigration is a big reason why I recently voted for Democratic Kyrsten Sinema for Senator. I basically agree with her on the issue of immigration. Link
