This was evidently news to Senators, the State Department and the Pentagon. Senator Corker was at the White House for a scheduled meeting with the President when the Syria announcement was made. Senator Corker's meeting was then cancelled. Senator Corker is Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee. Reporters asked the White House about a timetable for the withdrawal. The White House said check with the Pentagon. The Pentagon referred reporters back to the White House.
Once again we are forced to ask why: Why does the President not consult or at least advise Departments who will be affected by this change of policy? Why the change of policy at this particular time? Why go against the advice of the most of the foreign policy community, who say while ISIS has been seriously diminished, it is not defeated, and an American presence is necessary in Syria?
I don't know if the President is merely becoming more and more irrational, or something more sinister with respect to Russia is going on. Our withdrawal from Syria is a gift to Putin without any concessions from the Great Dealmaker. Most foreign policy experts agree that this action is not in the best interests of the United States. So what is Trump's motivation? My fear is that the answers might be in the currently redacted files of the Mueller investigation.
