61st Anniversary of the Launch of Vanguard 1

On 3/17/58 the U.S. launched its second satellite. Vanguard 1 was the first satellite to carry solar cells; the solar powered transmitter worked for six years. Sputniks 1 and 2 had batteries which worked for three weeks and six days, respectively. The batteries on Explorer 1 worked for four months.
