When Youtube puts a video in "restricted mode" it means that the video is censored from all users that have enabled the website's restricted mode feature - Which typically include libraries, schools, public institutions or any setting where viewers may belong to a younger demographic. The restricted mode feature is used in order to block videos that have been deemed inappropriate - such as porn or violence.

Isn't restricted mode account based? So as long as an individual user doesn't have it on they would have no issues? Legitimately don't know the answer on that one.

For giggles (this is a really boring meeting I'm in) I turned on restricted view and then did a search to see what I got: Image
I was also able to click on the PragerU video and have it load just fine. If suppression is the goal I'm thinking they are doing a terrible job. I'm curious if this maybe is more connected to YouTube's general battle with PragerU rather than anything related to this particular content.

That aside, is there a particular part or point you like from this that you want to discuss?

More specific details about this:

Videos containing potentially mature content will not be shown to viewers who have Restricted Mode turned on.

Drugs and alcohol: Talking about drug use or abuse, or drinking alcohol in videos.

Sexual situations: Overly detailed conversations about or depictions of sex or sexual activity. Some educational, straightforward content about sexual education, affection, or identity may be included in Restricted Mode, as well as kissing or affection that's not overly sexualized or the focal point of the video.

Violence: Graphic descriptions of violence, violent acts, natural disasters and tragedies, or even violence in the news.

Mature subjects: Videos that cover specific details about events related to terrorism, war, crime, and political conflicts that resulted in death or serious injury, even if no graphic imagery is shown.

Profane and mature language: Inappropriate language, including profanity.

Incendiary and demeaning content: Video content that is gratuitously incendiary, inflammatory, or demeaning towards an individual or group.

We know there is a risk that some important content could be lost if we were to apply these rules without context. We value stories where individuals discuss their personal experiences and share their emotions. Sharing stories about facing discrimination, opening up about your sexuality, and confronting and overcoming discrimination is what makes YouTube great, and we will work to ensure those stories are included in Restricted Mode. But just a reminder, to be included, your content must follow the guidelines above!

And yes, this is account-based. It is dependent upon the user’s settings.

This video loaded after the one Ceeboo linked, my advice to the Ted Lieu is if he wants to be credible in any way, don't have a booger in your nose when you present a quote out of context.

I'll be the first to point out that YouTube/Google are often very arbitrary in their content enforcement. You can find about a billion examples of things they have demonetized, removed or restricted that makes little to no sense. On the inverse there is a ton of content that should have been dropped that stayed up way too long.

It stands to reason for me that if the exact testimony on PragerU is worthy of being restricted it would be everywhere else unless there is something unique to their video (I'll admit I didn't watch it because I'd already seen the testimony). That is what led me to speculate that it is more about the feud those two are in as opposed to anything else.

I missed the porn and/or violence (and the censorship), so are you simply questioning the "deemed inappropriate" by a private company?

I'm not a lawyer but they probably aren't doing anything illegal. Am I only allowed to point out arbitrary behavior if it is illegal?
