I'm thinking we're one news story away from the conservatrolls here arguing that if girl power or black power is Ok, then what's wrong with white power? I can feel it in my bones.

The point is that "white power" is what started when the first immigrants from Europe aimed their muskets at the Indians, and has been in place ever since.

Some people, weirdly, feel that it would be fair if, from time to time, some other groups had a turn. Can't think why.

It's just an iteration of the same dispute over pride movements wondering why there can't be "white pride" too. The whole point of pride expressions for an oppressed group to assert that who they are has value and they deserve respect. Since white people don't have that problem as a class and "whiteness" is more defined by who it excludes, expressions of "white pride" or "white power" are usually meant and taken to mean an assertion of white dominance over others. They mean different things.

This is god damn obvious if you think about it for a second, but the people who do this know they are being hacks or are too dim or indifferent to figure it out. So, we're in store for a, "Oh, you think girl power is fine, but white power isn't? Someone's a hypocrite!"

A few days ago an acquaintance on Facebook recently posted the following quote (without attribution), and un-ironically described it as 'thought provoking':
I have often wondered about why Whites are racists, and no other race is......
Someone finally said it. How many are actually paying attention to this?
There are Black Americans, Mexican Americans, Asian Americans, Arab Americans, etc.
And then there are just Americans.. You pass me on the street and sneer in my direction.
You call me 'White girl,' 'Cracker,' 'Honkey,' 'Whitey,'... And that's OK..
You have the United Negro College Fund. You have Martin Luther King Day.
You have Black History Month.
You have Cesar Chavez Day.
You have Yom Hashoah.
You have Ma'uled Al-Nabi.
You have the NAACP.
You have BET....
If we had WET (White Entertainment Television), we'd be racists.
If we had a White Pride Day, you would call us racists.
If we had White History Month, we'd be racists.
If we had any organization for only whites to 'advance' OUR lives, we'd be racists.
We have a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, a Black Chamber of Commerce, and then we just have the plain Chamber of Commerce.
A white woman could not be in the Miss Black American pageant, but any color can be in the Miss America pageant.
If we had a college fund that only gave white students scholarships... You know we'd be racists.
There are over 60 openly proclaimed Black Colleges in the US .
Yet if there were 'White colleges', that would be a racist college.
In the Million Man March, you believed that you were marching for your race and rights.
If we marched for our race and rights, you would call us racists.
You are proud to be black, brown, yellow and orange, and you're not afraid to announce it.
But when we announce our white pride, you call us racists.
I am proud...... But you call me a racist.
Why is it that only whites can be racists??
There is nothing improper about this post.
It's not a crime to be white YET.... But getting very close

I think "pride" is a terrible word for what they are trying to convey in these movements. Why would anyone claim pride for the way they were born? They had no say or control in that.

I believe the word they're looking for is "acceptance." It's just not the most slogan-worthy.

Pride in your accomplishments makes sense, but the details of your birth do not represent any accomplishments on your part.
God belief is for people who don't want to live life on the universe's terms.

Pride movements are meant to encourage people who are oppressed for some trait to take pride in their whole self that includes that trait. Pride, in this sense, means you perceive yourself as having value. So a person isn't of value despite the fact they are gay, disabled, black, etc. but rather that identity doesn't diminish their worth.

Oh, I think I understand why the word picked up steam. I just think it sends a modified message from the one they are really trying to advertise, and has the added bonus of being easily misinterpreted, like we saw up-thread.

Does a person really feel pride for being born gay, black or a woman, or do they just want to live as though those attributes had no affect on their treatment and opportunities?

There's nothing in the details of my birth that gives me pride. There's a whole lot that makes me feel exceptionally lucky, but pride for that stuff is nowhere to be found. It would be like feeling you accomplished something by inheriting a million dollars. It's senseless.

Oh us poor white people!

Why can't we have "white [whatever]"? You have "black [whatever]" but if we want one of our own, you call us racists.

Look, the reason why all this white whining about "Why can't we have our own speshul stuff?" is out of place was nicely summed up in a satirical piece in The Onion some years back:

White History Year Resumes

WASHINGTON, DC—With Black History Month over, U.S. citizens are putting aside thoughts of Harriet Tubman and George Washington Carver to resume the traditional observation of White History Year.

A stamp honoring European-American aviation pioneer Charles Lindbergh is unveiled as part of White History Year celebrations.
White History Year, which runs annually from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, with a 28-day break for Black History Month in February, is dedicated to the recognition of European-Americans' contributions to American politics and culture.

"Frederick Douglass and Martin Luther King Jr. are all well and good," said Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist at a banquet celebrating the arrival of White History Year, "but now is the time to reflect on the accomplishments of such whites as Babe Ruth, Alexander Graham Bell, and Presidents Washington through Bush. Let's use these next 11 months to remember the other American history."

"Whites have contributed so much to this country," Frist continued. "Did you, for example, know that a white man, Jonas Salk, discovered the cure for polio? It's true."

From now until Feb. 1, 2004, educators will eschew discussions of Rosa Parks in favor of Andrew Carnegie, Neil Armstrong, and Tim Allen. Schools nationwide will shelve African-American history pamphlets in favor of such Caucasiacentric materials as the Macmillan & Rowe American History Textbook New Revised Standard Edition and Encyclopedia Britannica.

Scholars say there is a remarkable wealth of documented white history to explore.

"There's so much more white history out there than you might imagine," said Dr. James Corman, a Princeton University history professor. "America's publishing houses, newspapers, movie studios, magazines, and radio stations have kept remarkably thorough records of white Americans' accomplishments."

White History Year will also be commemorated on television, with various networks airing special programming recognizing whites' contributions to society. The History Channel will set aside the Tuskegee Airmen documentaries that have dominated its schedule throughout February, instead presenting programs on Chuck Yeager, the white man who broke the sound barrier, and Paul Revere, a key white figure in the nation's fight for independence from England. A&E's Biography will spotlight such white luminaries as Johnny Unitas, Mae West, and Edward R. Murrow. Between prime-time programs, NBC will air White History Minute segments hosted by white actress Bernadette Peters.

Americans of every color will set aside their differences to celebrate White History Year.

"I think it's good to give people a closer look at a culture they usually don't even think about," said Gary, IN, realtor Willie Anderson, a respected member of the city's black community. "I mean, it's right in front of you every day. It's such a huge part of your life. You're surrounded by it from the day you're born until the day you die, so it's easy to take for granted that you already know just about everything there is to know about it."

Added Anderson: "Do you realize that Henry Ford, a white man, invented the 'assembly line,' a mass-production technique that revolutionized industry around the world? They had something about it on TV again last night."

I'm white. And you know, one of the most marvellous things about it is that in a long and varied life I have never had to think "Damn. I might have been allowed to make a success of that if only I had not been white."

All the 'speshul' stuff? Respect for the contribution of white people to pretty well damn everything that gets seen as important? I've had it since I first started taking notice of the world around me.

What the empire-builder Cecil Rhodes said in a different context can be slightly modified to sum it up:

"Remember that you are a white person, and have consequently won first prize in the lottery of life."

I don't feel guilty about that fact. But anyone who pretends it is not the case is a ... not very nice person, shall we say?

I think you are confusing pride in the sense of self-respect and pride in the sense of a feeling of accomplishment connotated with being cocky. Pride movements concern the former, not the latter.
