I'm looking forward to taking my family on a road trip from Atlanta to New York City for Christmas/New Years next month. I'll be driving my wife's new Tesla Y model so this should make for an interesting experience. At first I thought it could never happen because I was always told charging stations were too few, but that isn't really the case. This website is a great resource for those planning an EV trip cross country because it details every charging station in the country. The idea is to drive a few hundred miles, hit a Super Charging unit which will charge 200 miles in 15 minutes, and then drive to a hotel that has overnight charging. I was surprised to find out how many hotels actually offer this feature, and the best part is that the charging is free to hotel clients. It is a 900 mile trip and a full charge supposedly gets me 325 miles, so it will take some patience and a little finesse to get it right, but I'm looking forward to the challenge.

Of all the wonderful places we've been to, none of us have ever been to NYC or Washington D.C. which is one of our pit stops.

Sounds fun, man, and I admit I'm slightly jealous. I've been to 40 states, and New York is not one of them (I've also been to Washington DC a few times - the mall is so worth the time. I think you'll enjoy it).

I look forward to the day when charging stations are as ubiquitous as gas stations and you don't need an app to find them.

I can't believe that after posting this my family got together and asked me please, let's not go to NY.

My wife cannot stand cold weather so we're going to drive to Miami instead and hop on a cruise to Aruba.

We have clients here from NY and they encouraged me to go in the Spring, which is what I think we'll do.

But I am excited about driving to Miami in the Tesla. I'm curious to find out if the advertised 325 mile range is legit. Will likely have to hit a supercharger in Valdosta and Orlando.

If you're going to go to NYC any time of year, FLY in and do NOT under any circumstances try to drive there. Take cabs or ubers or whatever. It's easy to get around there.

Spring or Fall.

Fall is gorgeous in NYC. School goes back after Labor Day and the city will be more quiet.

Same thing for D.C. Fly and ride, no driving. Spring for cherry blossoms.

I have been to NYC exactly twice in my life. The first time was when my family first arrived as new immigrants when I was 5 years old. I remember very little of that first first visit. I remember getting off the ship (the Stavangerfjord) and experiencing mingling with our fellow disembarking immigrants at the huge covered pier, and looking out of the window of the high rise hotel where we spent our first night in America, and watching a street sweeping machine way down below us, and that's it.

The second time I visited NYC was when I returned with my family from an overseas tour of duty in Spain with the U.S. Air Force. We picked up our Dodge van at the airport and drove it straight to Brooklyn Army Base, where we spent a few nights until we managed to arrange temporary insurance for our vehicle to last us until we drove to our next duty station at Bergstrom AFB, near Austin Texas. During those few days in NYC, we were able to do some sight seeing. We did not even try to drive our vehicle in the city. We saw enough of NYC traffic, and its excellent public transportation system to convince me that I would have to be practically insane to want to drive in NYC! My fondest memories of my second and last visit to that city were seeing Central Park, visiting the fabulous Natural History Museum, and finding out that New Yorkers were not generally as rude and unfriendly as I had been led to believe. Every time my family and I seemed even a little bit lost or out of place, some friendly New Yorker almost immediately approached us to ask if we needed any help finding our way to what we were looking for. We stepped into a bookstore, where we experienced only the most considerate and helpful service. We left NYC with fond memories of our brief stay there, and wishing we had had more time to experience what New York had to offer.
