Re: Manchin
Despite his disgracefully self-seeking behaviour, I would prefer not to see him give the Relief Society a Senate majority, which would amongst other things exclude a Supreme Court pick this time round.

Re: Manchin
You may be right at that.
But he also has a very large fortune invested in coal. Oh, wait, it's in a blind trust. So his vote (or lack of it) is entirely unmotivated by any idea of looking after his personal and family financial interests.
Manchin, whose vote is crucial to passage of President Joe Biden's domestic policy priorities in an evenly divided 50-50 Senate, has holdings valued at between $1 million and $5 million in Enersystems, Inc., the coal brokerage business he founded, according to his most recent financial disclosure form that covers 2020 activity.
And last year, he made more than $491,000 from his Enersystems holdings, the filings show. That's more than twice his $174,000 annual Senate salary.

He's a political whore. He makes his family's wealth off the lingering coal industry and is a liar who willing to throw his poorer constituents under the bus while using idiotic Right Wing talking points to justify his betrayal. No wonder you like him.Atlanticmike wrote: ↑Mon Dec 20, 2021 4:43 pmAt least one Democrat has some common sense!! Go Manchin go!!!!

https://www.breitbart.com/entertainment ... pologizes/Left-wing Hollywood star Bette Midler has insulted the people of West Virginia, describing them as “poor, illiterate and strung out” in a vicious Twitter rant aimed at Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV). She later apologized for her outburst, saying she was angry over the senator’s decision to vote against President Biden’s “Build Back Better” plan.
Bette Midler lashed out at the senator in a rageful tweet on Monday. “He wants us all to be just like his state, West Virginia. Poor, illiterate and strung out,” she wrote. (The term “strung out” typically refers to drug addiction.)
After receiving almost instant backlash, Midler switched to damage control mode. She issued an apology to the “good people” of West Virginia , saying she was “seeing red” over Manchin’s decision. “[West Virginia] is a beautiful state with loyal hard working people who want desperately to make a good living for their families!” she tweeted.
She also accused Manchin and “his whole family” of being a “criminal enterprise.”
As Breitbart News reported, Sen. Manchin said on Sunday he will oppose the $4.91 trillion Build Back Better Act, effectively killing the “mammoth” legislation. “I cannot vote to continue with this piece of legislation. … I can’t get there,” Manchin said on Fox News Sunday.
If she had spoken like this about any other minority she'd be cancelled immediately. And thus we see the two tiered system of bigotry espoused by Democrats and Hollywood. The fact that a Democrat was elected in 2018 to anything more than a dog catcher in WV perhaps lends more credence to her accusation that West Virginians are stupid and illiterate than anything else.
And when the Confederates saw Jackson standing fearless like a stonewall, the army of Northern Virginia took courage and drove the federal army off their land.

Me? No you're right. I'm a West Virginian by birth and don't really give a rip what Bette Midler thinks. But in reference to cancel culture this is yet another good example of the double standard that exists in the minds of "liberals" when it comes to tweeting negative things about a particular race/culture/socioeconomic class of people.Doctor CamNC4Me wrote: ↑Mon Dec 20, 2021 7:29 pmAre you really that concerned about bigotry, though?

She is right that A. James Mansion embezzled a lot of money while serving in the WV state government. At least that was the local consensus when I was a boy growing up. And perhaps it does demonstrate a degree of close mindedness in the minds of West Virginia voters to elect a man from a corrupt family who belongs to a party that no longer supports the best interests of working class coal miners. WV is representative of a huge change in the party loyalty between WJC, who won big in WV in 1992 and Hillary Clinton who got pummeled by Donald Trump in WV in 2016. Even with the old gerrymandering set up by Gov. Gaston Caperton (D) to disenfranchise wealthy Washington D.C. retirees looking for cheap land, peace, and quiet, I'm remain very surprised Mansion was ever elected in the first place. I doubt he keeps his Senate seat even as an independent, but I've been wrong before.

Re: Manchin
That’s an interesting statement. I was under the impression WV lost a Congressional seat back in the 90’s so redistricting was something that had to happen. What does your statement above mean in relation to redistricting?

Re: Manchin
Manchin is a Senator. Both of a state's senators are elected at large, so there is no Senate gerrymandering.ajax18 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 20, 2021 8:28 pmMe? No you're right.
