Exclusive: How California Put a Police Officer and His Family ‘Through the Fires of Hell’ over a False Accusation

Christine Dages, the wife of former police officer Matthew Dages, says the left-wing state has put her family “through the fires of hell” after her husband was wrongfully vilified and accused of a felony in regards to a 2020 arrest of a suspect in La Mesa, California.

In an exclusive interview with SiriusXM Patriot’s Breitbart News Saturday, Christine Dages detailed her husband’s case that sent social justice and Black Lives Matter (BLM) activists protesting outside their home in La Mesa in 2020 around the same time as George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

“On May 27, 2020, Matthew, my husband, was working as a police officer for the city of La Mesa. He was working a detail with other officers and he was involved in a very low-level use of force against a combative subject who had already assaulted Matthew,” Christine Dages said.

“His department deemed his use of force justified but the subject posted a video of their interaction online with the hashtag ‘George Floyd’ and it went viral. There were riots for days and the city burned down,” she continued. “Social justice activists called Matthew a racist and they demanded that he be fired and criminally charged for just doing his job.”

“When the city burned down, we actually had protests at our home as well,” Christine Dages said. “Our personal information was doxed online so we had to move. So we no longer live here … however, it’s really interesting, I feel like our story and what the city of La Mesa is doing to us is a cautionary tale for police families on what can happen in left-led cities when political pressure is applied.”

At the time, Christine Dages said La Mesa politicians “bowed to the mob” and used her husband as a scapegoat to end the destructive riots — firing him from the police department and criminally charging him with one felony count of filing a false police report to arrest the suspect.

In December 2021, after only about a days worth of deliberating, a California jury found Matthew Dages not guilty of the felony charge. Now, Christine Dages said her family is fighting to get her husband’s job back.

“The best way I can describe it is walking through the fires of hell. It’s been constant agony, not just for us as newlyweds — we got married just before this incident — but for our entire family,” Christine Dages said. “It feels like walking through fire because my husband is a white police officer who did his job so we’re people of faith which has helped keep our heads above water. It’s been agonizing on every level and I would not wish that hell on anyone.”

“Yes, he was acquitted last month and victory is so wonderful but our battle is far from over. We’re almost two years into this and we’re still fighting,” she continued. “It has been emotionally, mentally, agonizing on every level.”

Though the police union helped with Matthew Dages’ defense, it did not cover all costs. As a result, the Dages family has spent close to $100,000 of their own money to secure an acquittal and win a reinstatement hearing from a California superior court judge.

Readers looking to donate can visit the couple’s page on Instagram here and donate here.

“We’re fundraising for the exorbitant amount of money that it has cost our family to protect Matthew’s freedom … not all legal fees have been covered by Matthew’s union,” Christine Dages said. “100 percent of donations will support Matthew in clearing his name.”

Other law enforcement agencies in California and around the nation have reached out to offer Matthew Dages a job, expressing their support for his defense, his wife said. First, though, Matthew needs his police officer status back.

“We kind of had to learn the hard way that California is one of the worst places to be a police officer and it’s very dangerous in terms of its political structure for police families,” Christine Dages said.

“We really are seeing this play out nationally with the left demonizing police tactics and really prioritizing criminals over cops,” she continued. “So that was really eye-opening for me as a police wife.”

It amazes me that California is able to staff its police department. Look what they put this officer through over a false allegation. And were any of those who pushed this false allegation held accountable? We already have prosecutors around the country refusing to prosecute resisting arrest, at least when it's a member of the Democrat base. A $150k/year retirement at 55 does sound sweet but in my view that's still not even close to worth it, not $200k in legal bills, having your information doxed, having to move your family, every time some black criminal wants to play the race card.

Exhibit 1,749

As to why Brietbart is just Right Wing propaganda designed to push manfactured outrage to trigger racists.

No mention of the damning evidence proving he lied. If this were a black guy found not guilty ajax would be arguing the opposite. Like the OJ jury getting it wrong. Or the Central Park five being exonerated.

Nor does he acknowledge the many, many incidences whereby cops fabricate on their reports. He's just pissed because California has a no tolerance policy on racism. So he and his fake news outlets have to demonize it.

Did you watch the video of the body cam footage K Graham?

It astounds me just how much abuse this officer endured from this man. That alone would probably be enough to deter most officers from doing their job and confronting criminals. But then add to that another $200k in personal legal bills to be paid by the officer just to keep from going to jail himself due to this interaction and you start to see just how absurd the situation has become.

What was Johnson's crime that caused Officer Matthews to initiate contact?

ETA: Never mind, I decided to not be lazy and do some google-fu. Looks like the officer somehow mistook a cell phone for a lit cigarette… or something. And the officer felt that Johnson needed to pay a trolley fee, but Johnson told the officer that he was just waiting for friends -- and those friends literally drove up during the baseless interrogation.

Do I have it about right?

The officer's job was to make sure everyone in the trolley zone had a ticket. Officer Dages asked Johnson if he had a ticket? He asked Johnson if he lived nearby. Johnson lied and said yes he did initially. Officer Dages may have even mistakenly believed Johnson was smoking in the trolley zone. When he asked Johnson, Johnson got beligerant, cussed him out, and hit him. Because of political pressure, Officer Dages superiors made him amend his police report several times.

Bottom line, don't ask a black man if he has a ticket to be in a trolley zone. If he cusses you out and strikes you, don't try to handcuff or restrain him, or you will face up to three years in jail, loss of your job, loss of retirement, $200k in legal fees, and the California justice system will leak your name and the name of your family so that you'll be the target of violent BLM protesters. Even if you're found not guilty, they can still ruin your life. And they wonder why cops just turn their head look the other way.

Who here wants to be a policeman in California? They have openings.

Watching this video I don't know if he was in a "paid fare zone". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cNMCHx5LTM

This footage is from a police officer who was not initially in contact with Johnson but seems to run ACROSS the street to provide support. I could understand if they were speaking with Johnson if he was on the side of the road with the actual train tracks, but Johnson was across the street from the train tracks and was sitting outside of what looks like a parking garage. I don't see where Johnson is could be considered a paid fare zone. The whole premise is that these officers were conducting just a regular ticket check seems to be a huge stretch.

Dages was taking part in a “fare compliance operation” with other officers at the nearby trolley station and alleged in his report that he initially approached Johnson for smoking in public and failing to have a trolley fare while being in a “fare paid zone.”

Deputy District Attorney Judy Taschner told an El Cajon jury in his opening argument that Johnson was holding a cell phone and that no lighter, cigarettes or other smoking implements were found on his person following his arrest
Dages said in his report that he stopped him for smoking. He wasn't smoking and Dages knew he wasn't smoking after confronting him but put it in his report anyway. So he lied. Period.

So what's this white rage all about again?
On cross-examination, Dages said he realized Johnson had a cellphone in hand and was not smoking. Johnson had only keys and his phone on him. Dages acknowledged he did not include that information in his police report.

The fact that ajax/Brietbart runs to this racist cop's wife (who give's a crap what this dumb woman thinks?) to just rant and rave the usual talking points, kinda establishes the point that this cop wasn't innocent and he wasn't "just doing his job." I'm confident with a 115% certainty that if it were a white person holding a cell phone Dages never would have even considered stopping and questioning him. But he was black. He looked scary. It probably made some of the white folks there nervous. So he stopped him under the pretense of smoking. What utter BS, and it isn't surprising that Nazis are gleeful over the verdict. But it isn't really anything new. Getting Cops indicted for their crimes is difficult enough, but getting them convicted is even harder.

So what if the officer was mistaken in detaining Johnson? If you hit the police officer, why would you not expect to be arrested? Maybe a better approach would have been to calmly answer the officers questions rather than tell him to suck your **** and every other insult you could think of?

Is it a crime for a policeman to stop and question someone by mistake?
What utter BS, and it isn't surprising that Nazis are gleeful over the verdict.
I don't think you have any idea what a Nazi or racist even is. The lie detector test asked the officer if he stopped Johnson because he was black. The officer responded no and this was accepted as true according to the lie detector test. Do you not believe the science?
But it isn't really anything new. Getting Cops indicted for their crimes is difficult enough, but getting them convicted is even harder.
Finding a policeman when you're being robbed or having your home broken into will be the most difficult task of all. Good luck trying to defend yourself on your own.
