Sam Brinton is an MIT graduate who is both a queer activist and a specialist in handling nuclear waste. And he is the Biden Administration’s latest hire at the Department of Energy as the Spent Fuel and Waste Disposition Deputy.
And a follow-up article by the author:

There’s a lot to unpack in those articles, and the hire by the Biden Admin (even though I have no idea who within the admin gets to pick and choose appointments and how they’re presented to the President). But that’s not really why I’m posting. I’m posting because something interesting has happened within the last five or ten years where if your private life ‘brought discredit’ on your company, agency, or org you’d that instead of being an obstacle to employment or you’d be fired, it’s all good now. Whatever your views of LGTBQ+ rights is, I personally find the notion of a dude
[deleted] another dude who’s pretending to be a dog mentally ill and degenerate, it’s their
right to do it, and to larp being a dog handler who
[deleted] his puppies. But, just because that’s a consensual act between legal adults it doesn’t mean I have to find it normal, good, or tolerable.
I guess what I’m getting at, is 1) when did we pass the rubric of personal predilections not being a show stopper to high profile government appointments? And 2) does it really matter, and if so, why? I understand why I feel revulsion at this hire, and I have broader concerns for western civilization, but I’m trying to find a reason to understand how putting a deranged person into a leadership position is good for the organization.
Inb4 I’m a bigot. Like I said I get why I feel like the guy evokes a sense of disgust in me. I’m more interested in the cultural shifts mentioned above.

I see crap like this and I don't get disgusted, though I think I used to. Nowadays I just laugh and remind myself that humans are a peculiar species.

Yeah, it’s off putting to me, which I realize is a me issue. But I do wonder when the cultural shift happened where private behavior isn’t a show stopper for high profile appointments.

The former President got elected even after the country found out he raped his wife, has been credibly accused of raping others, and incriminated himself on a recording admitting to being a serial sexual assaulter. The current President's son is a crack head who took dick pics and videos of himself having sex with Asians who may or may not be minors. I think the shift took a hard turn with Trump.

Doc, I realize I'm not responding to your topic question, but I've never had the nerve to start an SSA thread, and still don't. So, maybe I'll just use your thread if you don't mind. I have worked hard to overcome my homophobic upbringing. I am there now. I accept it. Absolutely, there is a group of people who have a physiological makeup that causes them to be SSA. Sometimes it seems though that there is a disproportional number of people in this group that don't realize, or care that there is a group of people that have a physiological makeup that cause them to be repulsed by SSA.
I just really don't like even hetero kiss and tell. Let alone the other.

You’re good brother. You can post your views. I think I’m in the same camp in that I’d prefer certain behaviors, hetero or otherwise, to remain private because there about a million reasons why decorum and professionalism go hand in hand. I guess I left scratching my head and thinking, “When did aberrant personal behavior for a professional hire stop being a bar to high profile positions?” Like, I’d be ok with a CEO or General being let go if they released pictures of themselves being sex dungeon slaves. Why? Because, in a sense, being vanilla is advantageous when you have to manage people who come from all backgrounds, and at least half your people will most likely have conservative sentiments where a loss of confidence in a leader will probably affect the overall organization.

Good post Cam!
Doc, I intentionally avoid hardball politics because I don't know WTF I'm talking about.. I'll take soft topics though. Like, every human on the planet would be an improvement over that last clown stick. And, Biden is pretty much just a great big yawn. Making political appointments to align with demographics to improve his... whatever. When they drop the voting age in Cali to 16 (which would be a smart move) he'll appoint a valley girl to zone leader.
edit/add; Good post Cam

Does the organization's survival depend on getting votes from as many varied demographics as possible? If so, then that's your reason, methinks.

Maybe the cultural shift is just the realization that nobody is every man's ideal and everyone is different.
I'm revulsed by liver and onions, but if someone wants to eat it, I wouldn't deny them a job over it, even though I suspect something must be wrong with them.
