I discovered a YouTube video series today called "Cinema Therapy" with two guys who went to BYU. One is a licensed therapist, Jonathan Decker, and the other is a filmmaker, Alan Seawright. The series is essentially them reviewing certain aspects of movies related to therapy: reviewing movie therapists, relationships, and characters.

They mentioned in one episode they were LDS and went to BYU, but I thought they must be exmos because they swear pretty regularly, and say a ton of things that I wouldn't expect from active Mormons. I looked it up and apparently, they are still active.

Anyway, this post isn't about them being Mormon (although I find that aspect of it fascinating). It's about the series being extremely entertaining. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys listening to therapy ideas, or who enjoys movies, or both. They can be pretty funny at times, and I think they're pretty insightful. I find myself agreeing with the majority of their views.

Anyway, just thought I'd let you all know about it. I think it's pretty good (entertaining).

Must be in the zeitgeist or they crossed an algorithm threshold because YouTube recommended their video on Killmonger to me this week as well. I liked it, with the idea of a well written villain being appealing as a subject. I am not sure if it is typical of their other videos and am I correct in that it seems they favor family flicks?

I wouldn't say that, no. If they favor anything, it seems to be sci-fi. They do a lot on Star Wars and the MCU.

But I watched one on Titanic and another on The Notebook (man, they hated that movie... pretty funny).

One thing they did that completely cracked me up was when they covered Anakin Skywalker's story arc, it involved going back to the prequels. Alan, the filmmaker, hates those movies. At one point, John brings out a four-foot Darth Vader figure, held it up and said, "Tell me where on the Dark Lord the prequels hurt you." Kind of lost it there. Pretty funny.

ETA: What sucked me in originally was a video analyzing how good of a therapist Robin Williams' character in Good Will Hunting was. Then I watched their take on Richard Dreyfuss's therapist in What About Bob. So, they're all over the place with what they choose to review.

Thanks for pointing this out, Schmo. I guess YouTube was trolling me when I checked out their channel initially because it looked like it was almost entirely family movies.

I resurrected Jersey Girl's Netflix thread because I saw they reviewed the Netflix series Arcane, which is maybe the best series I've seen in a very, very long time. I don't recommend watching their take on it before watching the series. But after? Hearing a therapist and a filmmaker discuss it was YouTube gold.
