China Enters Era of Negative Population Growth

Last year, China's population declined by over 800,000 as compared with 2021. The shift from population growth to decline is not a temporary blip. Birth rates in China have experienced a long term decline.

Birth rates last year (births per 1000 people):

US (2021): 11.06
UK (2021): 10.08
China (2021): 7.52
China (2022): 6.77

China now joins a number of other countries, including the U.S., where the death rate exceeds the birth rate.

India will soon exceed China as the most populous country in the world, with a birth rate of around 17. The fastest growing region of the world is sub-saharan Africa. The birth rate in Nigeria is around 38.

This comes after China abandoned its one-child policy and is now up to three children allowed per family. Like Japan and the US, China has a boomer population (a rather uncouth one since they were raised during the cultural revolution).

I see this as a good thing, as I tend to worry about overpopulation.

Of course, negative population growth in China doesn't mean it's declining globally, but I'll take what I can get.
