So Proud of my Wife

She returned from Mozambique last week after doing a service tour with her friend Andreia. We're helping to finance a school for kids there and we also funded the construction of a well for easier access to water. The village she was helping had to walk 3 miles to access water, and the drilling of a well ran roughly $6k US. We were nervous about funding it because they told us water is found only about 15% of the time, so the money could be wasted. But we went ahead and bit the bullet anyway, and then four days later we received notice that they not only hit water, but they hit a LOT of water. It was only 15 meters down too. They said they usually have to go down 30-50 meters. They named the well after our family name and I've been bombarded with dozens of Facebook messages from Africa thanking me for helping.

Man. It really does feel good to know you've made a difference in the world.

She said one kid looked like he was 6 and she noticed puss coming out of his ear. He had a bad infection and couldn't hear. He just sat in the corner in pain, it was heartbreaking. I asked her if she could give him some amoxicillin, but it was forbidden. The laws are very strict there and the hospitals are 4 hours away and they will not help anyone unless they have written permission from both parents. Most of those kids only have one parent if any at all. It is really corrupt there as most of the aid gets funneled to the people in power.

She also said they noticed a Mango tree with tons of fruit hanging and when they grabbed one the children ran up to them and begged them not to eat it. When they asked why, they said the local witch doctor had put a curse on the trees there.

It took them a while to convince them there was no curse.

Wow, that’s very inspirational. A big THANK YOU to both you and her!

Walking three miles to get water? That’s a sobering thought.

That’s awesome. My wife did something similar in Cabo Verde a few years back. One thing we had to do is not think about all the things we thought was wrong because it was demoralizing. Once you stay focused on your project then it seemed to make sense. Good on you guys for rolling up your sleeves and hopefully making a generational difference.
