Whatcha Reading?
I'm in a bit of a reading slump and am curious what folks are or have recently read you'd recommend? Nonfiction, fiction, biography, anthologies of short stories, it doesn't matter.
Thanks!
ETA: I would offer up what I've read recently but part of what motivated starting this thread was the realization I haven't actually read anything of book length that wasn't work related in months. The last book I read, Slow Productivity by Cal Newport, was for personal reasons but there was a work angle to it. Podcasts have started to fill the time I used to dedicate to reading.
Thanks!

Not reading but I think I'd like to buy the Bridgerton series. I'm not good with reading. The words move around and patches of text vanishes. But every now and then I find something of interest enough to put up with it. I liked Diana gabeldon's books. (I think I like historical fiction).honorentheos wrote: ↑Sun Jun 16, 2024 3:50 pmI'm in a bit of a reading slump and am curious what folks are or have recently read you'd recommend? I have in the past read some dean Koontz I think that's the name lol. They were a bit weird.
Jamie reads books almost all the time. He said the last thing he read was, "the black company". He said it was good. Gosh. He's not a very chatty person.

Thanks! My wife likes the Bridgerton show. I read the first few books from The Last Kingdom series by Cornwell after seeing the Netflix show, which I considered both entertaining and informative. Being American, I felt I was doing alright hitting highlights in English history after the Battle of Hastings. Post-Romans to King William were the time of druids, ladies in lakes, and possibly dragons.IWMP wrote: ↑Sun Jun 16, 2024 4:03 pmNot reading but I think I'd like to buy the Bridgerton series. I love the Black Company. Classic gritty fantasy series. I can see why you husband just says it's good. It's a bit much to explain and not seem like there isn't much to it. The writing gives what is often mundane interactions between morally gray mercenaries texture that suits the series quite well. Have either of you read Joe Abercrombie's The First Law?

AHH. That would explain the lack of enthusiasm that Jamie had lol. He reads a lot of fantasy. He reads book after book and sometimes multiple at a time.honorentheos wrote: ↑Sun Jun 16, 2024 4:10 pmThanks! My wife likes the Bridgerton show. Diana gabeldon is more Scottish history, I think there is a TV series, "outlander". The other books I've read are Phillipa Gregory. Probably more girly books. I did read a weird one recently, it was the pharmacists wife by Vanessa Tait? I think. It was a bit too weird for me. I gave up. It was about abuse and heroin (the drug) and kinky shoe fetishes. I'm not a big reader.
Jamie said, "yeah it's fantastic" in reply to Joe Abercrombies the first law.
He said, "malazan series is a very good series".
He recommends, first law, black company and malazan.

He said the malazan series is inspired by black company, he said there is a lot more going on in malazan but it still has the mundane mercenary lifestylehonorentheos wrote: ↑Sun Jun 16, 2024 4:10 pmThanks! I haven't heard of this series so I'll check it out. Thanks for the suggestion! I'm all caught up on Abercrombie. I heard Best Served Cold is being made into a movie which I hope turns out well. Great book.IWMP wrote: ↑Sun Jun 16, 2024 4:36 pmHe said the malazan series is inspired by black company, he said there is a lot more going on in malazan but it still has the mundane mercenary lifestylehonorentheos wrote: ↑Sun Jun 16, 2024 4:10 pm

Re: Whatcha Reading?
I'm taking a break from reading WWI histories (mostly stuff by Peter Hart) to read some fiction -- I recently finished Erskine Childers' 'The Riddle of the Sands' (it was OK) and am currently well into 'The Last of the Mohicans' which I somehow dodged in High School. After that, if nothing else grabs my interest I had been thinking of revisiting some old favorites such as Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey and Maturin series or McMurtry's 'Lonesome Dove' -- but first I'll look into the books/authors you two have mentioned, since I'm not familiar with any of them.

I’m currently the fifth book deep into the Old Man’s War universe. The Old Man’s war:

It’s light, enjoyable reading. Kind of like if Heinlein wrote it while on holiday on the Italian coast.
