I'm a bit busy today and have a few threads to come back to later. But I thought I'd start a thread to share a few vids I think speak intelligently and meaningfully about topics being discussed across multiple threads. I also assume others will have material they'd like to share for consideration.

First, a conservative source: Aspen Ideas Festival speech by David Brooks the day before the debate on why authoritarianism is a threat, why it appeals to conservatives and religious folks, and why the threat of authoritarianism should be a conservative cause rather than enabled.

Robert Reich was the Secretary of Labor under Clinton. His weekly podcast is worth a listen and is part of my regular commute playlist. Here are two from the last couple of weeks well worth listening. The first discusses the same topic David Brooks tackled with a more economic perspective on why populism is the force dominating American politics:

Then this second podcast that just came out discusses the Biden interview from last week which I haven't seen discussed on the board yet. He discusses the tension in the Democrat party around a possible change in candidate this late in the race, etc.

Well Ceeboo, your first link has some guy with a microphone saying Biden supporters are like members of the Manson family.

I can say that is a bit over the top.

You do not want to hear what I think.

See above.
I appreciate you taking a moment to share a few clips you feel are relevant. I watched them (well, technically I listened to them while working on something else) I am left with a question: how do these clips inform your own political views and why you've come to believe as you do? I didn't see content in them that seemed to inform the discussion. I initially thought the comedian being interviewed by comedian and conspiracy theorist Joe Rogan may at least have a few positions they would argue. But really, it seemed the clips are just commentary on Joe Biden and his debate performance.

Did you become a conservative after Biden's debate performance and you are signalling to us this is the main reason you believe what you believe? which is...?

The above is a discussion between David Brooks and Fareed Zakaria. It represents an example of two people with different political views engaging in civil discussion.

For ceebs, another approach to discussing the debate that isn't partisan:
https://youtu.be/OSUcTcJJ2Rc?si=N9dpb5mxK2yR_e_p

The latest national poll from The New York Times and Siena College shows former President Donald J. Trump leading President Biden by nine percentage points among registered voters — a pretty big shift in his direction in the week since the presidential debate.

It has become clear in the past week that there is no obvious path to replacing Mr. Biden as the Democratic Party’s nominee. But there is a strong desire among Americans for something different.

We heard that directly from voters we met last week in Kenosha, Wis., at a gathering of a group called Braver Angels. It’s a nonpartisan organization that finds common ground across political divisions, and it proved a perfect focus group after the debate.

Lol. Honor provides two luminaries of political thought, and Ceeboo provides a comedian.

You can’t make this crap up.

- Doc

Edit: Max Nordau, indeed. Lol.

To be fair, I'm sure ceebs shared those as examples of where he takes issue with divisive speech in other venues. It was very kind of him to take the time to point those out. /cap

Since I received so much love over the comedian, Joe Rogan, I thought I would add another one from him.
