Jason Colacino and Katie Boyle - Honky Tonk (YouTube video)

Post by ceeboo »

Just kidding. :)

Take a break from all of the divisive rhetoric and demonization surrounding politics.

This is simply beautiful!

thanks Ceeboo, enjoyable.
You're welcome.
The young lady could dance,
Indeed! While I am a terrible dancer, I love to watch people who can dance. I also enjoy figure skating (I can't skate either) :)

Nah - She good.

We took dance lessons for a few years at one point. Our teachers were good but I got an idea of how math class must have been for some people. I had a harder time getting things than most people did. I did learn a bit about how it works, though.

Colacino doesn’t look all that great, but the fact that Boyle looks so good is partly down to his skill. That’s the old sexist concept of traditional ballroom: the man leads, with the goal of making the woman look good. He’s not supposed to show off. He’s supposed to handle all the things that keep them moving together as a couple, while she shows off. Those are the game rules of ballroom.
I was a teenager before it was cool.

Cool!

I have thought about signing us up for classes/lessons (my bride and I) for some time but never have.

As someone who knows very little about dance (and as someone who isn't a very good dancer) this all sounds right to my ears.

Like many other things, I tend to believe that some people are just more gifted to do certain things than others.

As an example, check this guy out - Surely, this type of insane talent can't be learned.

Ballroom dancing is fun to learn even if you're rhythmically challenged like me. You might have to be humble; your partner might have to be patient. You may have to accept that you're never going to be super-cool on the dance floor. The basics will eventually sink in, though, even for people like me.

There are a lot of kinds of dance, and a lot of things you can do in each of them. There's a lot of cross-training, because almost any kind of move that you can do in one dance can also be done in almost any other kind of dance, with the right adaptation—which mostly just means adapting the rhythm. So it takes less time and effort than you'd think to become passably proficient at pretty much all kinds of Latin and ballroom dancing.

It's a far cry short of being expert at any particular style. I wouldn't know anything about what that can be like. It's not so hard to learn enough to be able to enjoy a night of dancing in lots of different styles, though, and once you get that far, you can retain that modest level of ability for many years with only occasional refreshers. You might only dance once or twice a year, but you can do that for decades, and so it may well be worth it.
