Cenk Uygur

Post by ceeboo »

Other than knowing a little bit about TYT and seeing Cenk a few times on a couple of podcasts I watch (One was PBD podcast) - I don't know a lot about his TYT channel or him.

Having said that, I just watched the below linked Piers Morgan Uncensored video (it's a about 70 minutes long)

My question: How many of you are familiar with Cenk? And, if you're willing to share, what do you think about him?

Thanks in advance.

I tried watching TYT stuff years ago when it was first starting to get big, but it seemed way too sensationalist for my taste. I instinctively just swipe right through clips now whenever they pop up in any of my social feeds. Definitely not a fan.

I've never been tempted to listen to Uygur. I'm suspicious of the judgement of someone who chooses to call their channel 'The Young Turks.' The original Young Turks precipitated the Armenian Genocide. He has to be aware the history.

I didn't know that about the original TYT/Armenian Genocide (wonder why he would choose that name?)

Anyway, thanks for answering the OP question.

After visiting Turkey once I got somewhat interested in Turkish history. I don't think I'd say that "the" Young Turks precipitated the Armenian Genocide. The movement calling itself that lasted for decades, from the later 19th century, mostly pushing for modernisation and democracy in the Ottoman Empire. In 1913, one organised faction of the Young Turk movement finally seized control of the Ottoman government, and was indeed later responsible for the genocide. Did they permanently tie the whole movement to genocide?

As a comparison, you can't call yourself a Nazi but say that you're not endorsing the Holocaust because by "Nazi" you only mean the early, good era in which the National Socialists were just reducing unemployment and making May First a holiday in honour of workers. The Nazi Party was a tightly organised party with one clear leader, and it took power after only fifteen years of existence. It was never a broader movement than Hitler's regime and its early phase wasn't significant enough to define an era.

On the other hand, you could probably identify early American Patriots as an ideological movement, with a diverse group of leading figures like Washington and Jefferson. You'd also have to admit that part of this movement developed into the southern Confederacy that fought to maintain slavery. I don't think you'd say that the revolutionary-era Patriots are mainly associated with having precipitated the Civil War.

The Young Turks would seem to be somewhere in between those examples. I've never heard of Cenk Uygur and I never watch podcasts.

The three names in the OP (Cenk, Piers Morgan, and Candace Owens) fall into a similar category for me. I don't seek them out, wouldn't cite them when making an argument, and don't see that changing any time soon.

Young Turks to me means someone who definitely would not graduate from Prager U due to having progressive reform ideas.

Morley, Ana Kasparian the co-host of the show is Armenian. Should we be worried for her? After all, Cenk is Turkish. Anyway, we can get back at Cenk by having a traditional American Thanksgiving dinner.

My daughter likes listening to Cenk's nephew's podcast.

You're both right, of course, to call me out on this.

To be honest, I'm sure that Uygur means the term to suggest a more common meaning, as in that they represent new, headstrong revolutionaries who are seeking to overturn the status quo. The allusion still persistently jabs at me, however, and is enough to bias me against him. Maybe my loss.
