Jimmy Kimmel is the lastest casualty. Trump's FCC threatened ABC, owned by Disney, that it would pull ABC's broadcasting license unless Kimmel's show was taken off the air.

These people are trampling on the First Amendment.

Pam Bondi vows to go after people for their words, if they are deemed hateful by the government:
US attorney general Pam Bondi’s pledge that the Trump administration will “absolutely target” people who use “hate speech” in the wake of the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk has prompted criticism of the idea from across the political spectrum, including from prominent conservatives.

Bondi said on a podcast hosted by Katie Miller, the wife of the rightwing White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, that there is “free speech and then there’s hate speech, and there is no place, especially now, especially after what happened to Charlie, in our society”.

She was rightly blasted in a number of newspapers and online publications, including the Wall Street Journal.

Maybe this is what you get when you hire someone who graduated from a law school at the bottom of the second tier for a serious job. She probably never even read the Constitution.

She evidently got a brush-up course in the First Amendment from *someone* because she was forced to walk back her risible and horrific position.

What say you, so-called "conservatives"?

Real conservatives believe in the First Amendment. For them, it is not something to barter away for power, profit, or passion.

What say you?

Just saw the bit about Kimmel. It's complete BS in a country where free speech is codified as a constitutional right.

Of course this is all coming from an administration whose leader thinks the Declaration of Independence is a "love letter".

(Wondering what happens if he successfully yanks youtube. That's what so many folks here use for news these days.)

FCC threatened ABC's broadcast license.

I don't think people realize how important our comedians are to a healthy society. He's not making us great. He's trying to make us all sick--mentally, spiritually, and physically.

What's he gonna do shut down all of Hollywood, too?

One thing is for sure. He can't take away our creativity, Philo Sofee. You know that's true.

No other right established in the Bill of Rights in our U.S. Constitution is more important or more sacred than the first amendment guarantee of freedom of religion and of the press, and no Supreme Court prior to the current, largely Trump appointed complement of Justices would even have begun to seriously condone the measures now being demanded by Trump and his MAGA administration. It should not be allowed now. I fear that the current Supreme Court is so intimidated or owned by Trump that there is a real danger that they might even rule in Trump's favor on this horrible travesty. If this prevails, we will certainly have regressed all the way into an absolute, authoritarian tyranny! Among the most abominable things advocated by Charlie Kirk were the abolishing of freedom of religion and freedom of speech and the press. Trump seems to be leaning strongly in that direction. That is why it is imperative that he and his ilk be voted out office permanently!

Trump has even said in interviews that he doesn't know if he ought to honor his oath to defend the constitution! For this reason alone, he should have been impeached!

Trump and his allies are responsible for what they are doing to the USA, certainly, just as Hitler and his Nazi followers were responsible for what they did to France when they defeated France in WWII.

But as General de Gaulle pointed out, the French high command was responsible for their defeat as a result of their failure to realise that warfare had changed radically since the end of WWI in 1918, and their refusal to take the advice of younger officers like de Gaulle who urged them to develop mobile armour of the kind that Germany used in its successful 'lighting war' (blitzkrieg).

Similarly, we may ask: how on earth could the Democratic Party have let this awful disaster happen, a disaster which looks as if it may well destroy the America of the Founding Fathers? Even now, as an outsider I find myself asking myself why there are no strong voices from the party launching the lethal attacks on Trump's idiocies that even I could put together in ten minutes' work. Where is the work being done to crush the Republicans in the mid-terms as they deserve? I just can't see it, and that is more than a little alarming.

You're wrong! It wasn't Kimmels show.

Let's present some facts, shall we! First, Kimmel has not been silenced, he is free to launch podcasts, create a YouTube channel, establish his own network, start a blog, purchase a struggling newspaper and revitalize it with his free speech, and even stand on public property to protest as much as he desires. He was an employee, and he was dismissed for his poor judgment, and a private company is entitled to terminate anyone they choose. The show he hosted did not belong to him.

Secondly, if a talk show host chooses to criticize conservatism and conservatives consistently over the years, it is inevitable that he will face termination as the culture shifts towards conservatism. As viewership declines, the network will seek to replace him with someone who holds a more neutral stance to boost ratings and, consequently, revenue.

Could everyone on the thread please explain how Jimmy Kimmel has been silenced after being fired from a show he didn't even own? What actions are prohibited for him as a free American?
