He's refusing to sign the COVID relief bill because it gives too much money, billions in fact, to foreign countries (and it does, which baffled me when I read it) and he said the $600 for working Americans needs to be increased to $2000.

You're probably right, although I never agreed to giving cash to people generally, that seemed like vote buying and nothing else; only people who had lost their jobs and can't pay rent etc., small businesses, and some other business as affected.

The problem is that this screams publicity stunt for sympathy, or even subtle revenge -- "screw you all for not voting for me".

If the broken bill is the best that can be agreed to after months, that sucks, but something is better than nothing, and preventing it from going through isn't going to help.

It’s not like other countries haven’t shown us how to keep people who can’t work afloat when they need to impose restrictions. We’re so damn dysfunctional that it takes our government 9 months to send people about half a months rent.

The whole bill is crap. I’d veto the damn thing and tell Congress to send a clean bill for money for out of work families and don’t you even think about going home for Christmas until it’s on my desk.

Can I just say this? $600 bucks after what, 8 months?

So this is how this gets played:

TAMPA (WFLA) – House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday night responded to President Trump’s call for an increase in stimulus funds following Congress’s passage of the COVID-19 relief package this week, saying she’s ready to push for the $2,000 checks the president requested.

“Republicans repeatedly refused to say what amount the President wanted for direct checks,” Pelosi tweeted, placing the blame on GOP lawmakers. “At last, the President has agreed to $2,000 — Democrats are ready to bring this to the Floor this week by unanimous consent. Let’s do it!”

A lot of the GOP wanted $300 checks. The Democrats pushed hard for $600. Trump wants $2k? I think he wants to be remembered by his going-away present. For Pelosi it could be a smart political move. She gets to drive a wedge between Trump and most of the GOP. This is going to be an interesting power struggle. I don't think we're going to see $2k checks, but the political fallout could be significant. Trump/Pelosi could be the most unlikely pact since Molotov/Ribbentrop.

Trump's idea of stimulus money that can be redeemed at Trump properties sounds intriguing.

Just days before Christmas, President Donald Trump announced that he’d given a wave of pardons to three corrupt former Congressmen, two subjects of the special counsel’s Russia investigation, and four Blackwater guards convicted in connection with the killings of Iraqi civilians.

The White House said Tuesday that the president will grant full pardons to 15 individuals and commute part or all of the sentences of five more people.
