What is a testimony and how is it developed?

I've always thought of the LDS testimony as being developed by rote.

No, testimony is gained by receiving answers to prayer. Revelation is the only way to gain testimony, there is no other way.

There are different manifestations of the spirit. Some of them are very gentle, calming experiences. When you are upset, nervous, etc. the body is experiencing high levels of epinephrine. When the Spirit gives comfort, there is an immediate calming. There is no "natural" explanation for the sudden depletion of epinephrine in the system.

Then there are the more powerful manifestations of the Spirit. "Burning in the bosom" is one. But there are other which are more powerful, and involve a more extended experience, as Nehor has said. You don't forget it when you have experienced it, and you don't confuse it with any other type of experience.

And yes, I have experienced those.
