Re: The Story of Karma and the Firm that Wouldn't Bow to Mormon
Hello,
I love the concept of the City Creek development. The Gateway was a wonderful addition to downtown Salt Lake City (SLC), and I myself have brought my family to it every_single_time I have been to SLC for business. Additionally, if the Mormon church is freeing up its money for this kind of project that means thousands of men and women are employed, building something beautiful, and receiving a paycheck. Let us not forget that we are in a recession, and the Mormon church spending money in Utah is a positive thing for the economy.
So. Let us review:
1- It is helping the poor by employing people.
2- It is being progressive by developing downtown SLC with bold and creative architecture.
3- It is helping the Utah economy by pouring billionis of dollars into it for this project.
The timing could not be better. This is truly an inspired project. Not "god-inspired", but inspired nonetheless.
Very Respectfully,
Doctor CamNC4Me

Which is all very well and good, IF YOU LIVE IN UTAH. Most of the poor, the widowed, and the afflicted of the world (those Christ told us to take care of) do NOT live in Utah.
So just as the conference center was a gift to the citizens of SLCentral, built with church money, so is this project a gift to the citizens of SLCentral. If they were really carrying on their mandate via your standard, we'd see similiar projects around the world or at least around the country. Instead, they're building up only their own back yard, helping only their own, working only for their own benefit.

No, it's supposed to be God's money. All of it, including the businesses owned by the church.

Hello,
Well apparently the Mormon god wants this development, no?

I agree with Dr. Cam in every way.
I drove past the construction sites last Wed. and realized how radically the City Creek dev. will change the city, how beautiful the city of Salt Lake was, and how positive this development will be.

What, exactly, do you think the church should do with tithing money?
Help the poor? There will always be poor among us, so why would they waste money on the poor?
Help the widowed? There will always be widows among us, so why would they waste money on the widows?
Help the afflicted? Well, there will always.... blah blah blah...
So what should a church do, with all that excess tithing money? I mean... really?
They could build hospitals for children and not charge any money:

Yeah, that's what an arm of the organization (Free Masonry) from which Joseph Smith lifted most of the temple ceremony and symbols from would do. Not what LDS Inc would do.

Everything of any importance to the church is located in SLCentral, including Primary Children's Hospital. Our leaders don't feel compelled to build billion dollar shopping malls out in the mission field, that's for sure. Nor do they feel compelled to show exactly where tithing money is spent.

Re: The Story of Karma and the Firm that Wouldn't Bow to Mormon
The Nehor wrote:The money for the project comes from the profits accrued from Church-owned businesses. Many suggest that that is tithing money since some of the money to buy those businesses may have come from tithing. I disagree.
.
Do you disagree? Why? All assets the Church owns are ultimately tied back to contributions from its members, whether tithing, fast offering, missionary funding etc. At some point some of these funds, most likely from tithing, was used to acquire business assets. Since money is fungible it really does not matter that the mall project is being funded from income from for profit businesses. It all ties back to member contributions. The Church produces nothing. It sells nothing to make a profit on. And further who cares? Does the fact that a massive real estate project that will primarily benefit downtown SLC to the tune of more than double the initial projects 1.5 billion or so is not being funded from tithing supposed to give us warm and fuzzies? If the Church has that kind of money to invest, or even if they are leveraging it and paying it over time, this still begs the question of whether those massive funds could be better used for other purposes.
