It depends on what you mean by more "mainstream publicity"?
no such thing as "bad publicity" my friend, just ask Oscar Wilde:
"The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about."
The Church already has enough political "power", if Prop8 is an example of the LDS Church exercising its political power then I encourage it. Let the Church back unconstitutional, discriminatory campaigns full of lies and exploit all of the resources it has including the membership and their funds to fight battles that will be overturned shortly afterwards.
and soon to be overturned again and not backed by the US Constitution nor Fed, and an overwhelming majority of state constitutions will see that it never does. (and please do not insult history by trying to equate LGBT with racism or sexism, the former has never been proven to be immutable and never will be and such an equation only insults the integrity of the latter.)

It would be difficult to purposefully compose a more nonsensical paragraph. Congratulations.

Wow. Just wow.
I’d read that the Church is studying the missionary techniques of the Jehovah’s Wittnesses and the Seveth Day Advebtists—since both have larger memberships and higher growth rates than the Mormons--but…Scientology!?
Scientology…eeeeew!
Subgenius, is this an example of one of the new missionary tools the Church is using to prop up its sagging membership?
So how’s that working out for ya?
The "I'm a Mormon" Ads will probably be as effective as they were for Scientology.
