Although the Church gets some kudos for at least acknowledging it happened, and that members of the Church were involved, one might also argue that they are ponying up only after all this has become widespread knowledge due to the Internet.
Had there been no threat, no need to counteract the bad press they can't control, it wouldn't surprise me if no such effort would have been invested.
