Re: Bible verse by verse
There is much more to understanding the nature of The Bible than knowing how it was organized and divided into chapter and verse.
No precept or claim is more likely to be false than one that can only be supported by invoking the claim of Divine authority for it--no matter who or what claims such authority.

I have already told you several times what I think of the Bible. It is clear to me that it contains both history and mythology, both fact and fiction, and both great wisdom and abject nonsense. It is a compilation of ancient writings and oral traditions collected over centuries and millennia. It is neither the oldest of the ancient religious texts that have come down to us through the ages nor any more likely to be the inerrant word of an omniscient deity than any of the others. Claiming that it is perfect and inerrant is at least as unreasonable and wrong as denying that it has any value for us whatsoever. Nevertheless, it is a very important part of our cultural heritage; thus none of us can justly claim to be fully educated or culturally literate without having at least some acquaintance with its contents.
LittleNipper wrote:You reject what you disagree with, accept what you agree with, and you determine which is which. All of which is the end result of "education." And where exactly does God fit into this rationalization?
I would guess in the same place as the Invisible, Flying Spaghetti Monster.

The period of New Testament revelation, extending over a century, began with the appearance of John the Baptist.

Pulling a Bible off of my shelf I notice it has books from the time between the Old and New Testament. There are four books of Maccabees which are interesting, Sirach which is valuable etc. So come again, what is the Bible? Or how do you know what is Bible or what is not Bible?

Good points, huckleberry. Who decided which of the ancient writings were to be included in what became today's Canonical Bible? There are a number references in both the Old Testament and New Testament to writings which the writers of the books in the Bible we know evidently revered as sacred scripture, yet which are not included in any currently acknowledged version of the Bible.

To demonstrate your level of understanding you cut-and-paste text written by someone else? And without attribution, to boot? In your defense, this exact text appears on some 3,000 websites so maybe you weren't sure which one deserved credit.LittleNipper wrote:Bret Ripley wrote:No, you don't. Not really. What you accept is an ill-considered ideology about the Bible. In order to "accept" the Bible (whatever you may think that means) you would first need to make an attempt to understand something of its nature. This is something you seem curiously determined to avoid.
You need to understand it's nature. The Old Testament is divided into three parts:
1.The Law (Torah), consisting of the Pentateuch, or five books of Moses.
2.The Prophets, consisting of…(etc. etc.)
In all seriousness, please consider giving this book a try:

It was written by faithful Christians and has an Evangelical publisher (Zondervan). I really think you'd get a lot out of it.

No.
You believe the flood happened because some relatively modern translators wrote down what they thought some iron age writers wrote down pertaining to what they thought, or what they had heard someone thought, about a bloke claiming to be Jesus had said about a flood.
That said, with the Book of Mormon, we are not dealing with a civilization with no written record. What we are dealing with is a written record with no civilization. (Runtu, Feb 2015)

Bloke (comics), a fictional character in the Marvel Universe ------ who you believe called himself "Jesus." Yeah----- whatever

The Epic Flood story exists historically worldwide in ancient languages and even in ancient alphabetic characters. God (or gods) get mad at the human race for being evil. One man and his family finds grace in the eyes of said God (or gods). This family becomes the sole survivor of a horrific worldwide Flood that destroys all living things everywhere on the earth's surface. This family survives in a large chest, box, great ship, ark that has been constructed to house them along with all kinds of animals to be saved. Even the most atheistic of Scientist today can find all sorts of fossils everywhere, and even those of sea creatures on top of mountains. They find sheared off preserved, petrified, and fossilized trees and the most astounding things are found in coal mines that cannot be understood unless something totally out or the ordinary happen at some point in time. Uniformitarians and evolutionists simply ignore such things until they might someday fit them into the materialistic/humanistic theory they developed on their own.

No, a version of a tale involving a flood exists in various historical religious based narratives.
God (or gods) get mad at the human race for being evil.
But God created man and God created evil. So how can He get mad at something He Himself generated? A bad workman...and all that....
One man and his family finds grace in the eyes of said God (or gods). This family becomes the sole survivor of a horrific worldwide Flood that destroys all living things everywhere on the earth's surface.
Yep, your God drowned all those other men, women, children, babies etc He's a genocidal maniac...yes, we know, we've been through this before.

Do scientists conclude that the evidence supports that a Great Flood is how those findings came about?
Uniformitarians and evolutionists simply ignore such things until they might someday fit them into the materialistic/humanistic theory they developed on their own.
Religionists discount the tangible evidence preferring to go with the baseless assertion of "God dunnit wiv magik".
We are back to - you believe what you believe because it's what you want to believe.

Yeah, that's all a load of garbage. Point to one published example of fossils being found where they shouldn't be found.
