I thank my God continually regarding you because of God’s love and kindness given to you through Jesus the Messiah,

Indeed, the testimony about the Messiah has become firmly established in you;
so that you are not lacking any spiritual gift and are eagerly awaiting the unveiling of our Lord Jesus Messiah.

For some of Chloe’s people have made it known to me, my brothers, that there are quarrels among you.
I say this because one of you says, “I follow Paul” Another says, “I follow Apollos” --- another, “I follow Cephas”; while yet another says, “I follow the Messiah!”
Has the Messiah been split in pieces? Was it Paul who was put to death on a cross for you? Were you immersed unto the name of Paul?
I thank God that I didn’t immerse any of you except Crispus and Gaius —
otherwise someone might suggest that you were indeed immersed into my name.
(Oh yes, I did immerse Stephanas and his household; beyond that, I can’t remember whether I immersed anyone else.)
For the Messiah did not send me to immerse but to proclaim the Good News — and to do it without relying on “wisdom” that consists of mere rhetoric, so as not to rob the Messiah’s execution-tree of its significance.
For the message concerning the execution-tree is nonsense to those in the process of being destroyed, but to us in the process of being saved it is the power of God.
Indeed, the Scripture says,
“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and frustrate the intelligence of the intelligent.”
Where does that leave the philosopher, the Law-teacher, or any of today’s thinkers? Hasn’t God made this world’s wisdom look pretty foolish?
For God’s wisdom ordained that the world, using its own wisdom, would not come to know Him. Therefore God decided to use the “nonsense” of what we proclaim as His way of saving those who come to trust in it.
Precisely because Jews ask for signs and Greeks try to find wisdom,
we go on declaring a Messiah executed on a tree as a criminal! To Jews this is an obstacle, and to Greeks it is nonsense;
but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, this same Messiah is God’s power and God’s wisdom!
For God’s “absurdity” is wiser than humanity’s “wisdom.”
And God’s “weakness” is stronger than humanity’s “strength.”
Just look at yourselves, brethren — observe those whom God has called! Not many of you are scholarly by the world’s standards, not many exercise power or boast noble birth.
But God selected what the world considers nonsense in order to shame the wise; God chose what the world considers weak in order to shame the strong;
and God chose what the world labels common or regards as worthless in order to bring to nothing what the world considers important;
so that no one should boast before God.
It is His doing that you are united with Jesus the Messiah. He has become wisdom for us from God, and righteousness and holiness and redemption as well!
Therefore — as the Scripture reveals — “Let anyone who wants to boast, boast about the Lord.”

Also I was with you as somebody weak, nervous and shaking all over from fear;
and neither the delivery nor the content of my message relied on compelling words of “wisdom” but on a demonstration of the power of the Spirit,
so that your trust might not rest on human wisdom but on God’s motivation.
Yet there is a wisdom that we are speaking to those who are perfect. But it is not the wisdom of this world or of this world’s leaders, who are in the process of passing away.
On the contrary, we are communicating a secret wisdom from God which has been hidden until now but which, before history began, God had predetermined would bring us glory.
None of this world’s leaders understood it; because if they had, they would not have executed the Lord from whom this glory flows.
But, as the Scripture says, “No eye has observed, no ear has heard and no one’s heart has imagined all the things that God has prepared for those who accept Him.”
It is to us (Christians), however, that God has revealed these things. How? Through the Spirit. For the Spirit investigates all things, even the profoundest depths of God.
For who understands the inner workings of a person except the person’s own spirit within him? So too no one knows the inner workings of God except God’s Spirit.
Now we have not accepted the spirit of the world but the Spirit of God, so that we might understand the things God has so freely given us.
These are the things we are speaking of when we avoid the manner of speaking that human wisdom would suggest and instead use a manner of speaking instructed through the Spirit, by which we explain things of the Spirit to people who have the Spirit.
Now the worldly man does not receive the things from the Spirit of God — to him they are ridiculous! Moreover, he is unable to grasp them, because they are comprehended through the Spirit.
But the person who possesses the Spirit can evaluate everything, while no one is in a position to evaluate him.
For who understands the mind of the Lord? Who will direct Him? But we (Christians) have the mind of the Messiah!

For when one says, “I follow Paul” and another, “I follow Apollos,” aren’t you behaving human?
After all, what is Apollos? What is Paul? Only servants through whom you came to trust. Indeed, it was the Lord who brought you to believe through one of us or through another.
I planted the seed, and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow.
So neither the planter nor the waterer is anything, only God who makes things grow — planter and waterer are the same.
However, each will be rewarded according to his work.
For we are God’s co-workers; you are God’s field, God’s structure.
Using the grace God gave me, I laid a foundation, like a skilled master-builder; and another man is building on it. But let each one be careful how he builds.
For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus the Messiah.
Some will use gold, silver or precious stones in building on this foundation; while others will use wood, grass or straw.
But each one’s work will be shown for what it is; time will tell, because it will be revealed by fire — the fire will test the quality of each one’s work.
If the work someone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward;
if it is consumed, he will have to feel the loss: he will still escape with his life, but it will be like escaping through a fire.
Don’t you know that believers are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you?
So if anyone ruins God’s temple, God will ruin him. For God’s temple is holy, and you yourselves are that temple.
Let no one kid himself. If someone among you thinks he is wise (by this world’s standards), let him become “foolish,” so that he may become really wise.
For the wisdom of this world is nonsense, as far as God is concerned; inasmuch as the Scripture says, “He traps the wise in their own cleverness,”
and again, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are worthless.”
So let no one boast about human beings, for all things are yours —
whether Pauls or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future: they all belong to you,
and you belong to the Messiah, and the Messiah belongs to God.

18 Let no one deceive himself; if any one doth seem to be wise among you in this age -- let him become a fool, that he may become wise,
19 for the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God, for it hath been written, `Who is taking the wise in their craftiness;'
20 and again, `The Lord doth know the reasonings of the wise, that they are vain.'
21 So then, let no one glory in men, for all things are yours,
22 whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things about to be -- all are yours,
You (Christians) should regard us as the Messiah’s servants, as trustees of God’s secret truths.
Now one thing asked of a trustee is that he be trustworthy.
And it matters very little to me how I am evaluated by you or by any human court; in fact, I don’t even evaluate myself.
I am not aware of anything I've done wrong, but this does not make me innocent. The one evaluating me is the Lord.
So don’t pronounce judgment prematurely, before the Lord comes; for He will expose what is now hidden in darkness; He will reveal the motives of people’s hearts; and then each will receive from God whatever praise he deserves.
Now in what I have said here, brethren, I have used myself and Apollos as examples to teach you not to venture beyond what the Scripture says, proudly taking the side of one leader against another.
After all, what makes you so special? What do you have that you didn’t receive as a gift? And if in fact it was a gift, why do you boast as if it weren’t?
Are you filled and already rich? You're kings, even though we are not? Well, I wish you really were kings, so that we might share the kingship with you!
For I think God has been placing us apostles on display at the rear of the parade, like men condemned to die in the public arena: we have become a spectacle before the whole universe, angels as well as men.
For the Messiah’s sake we are fools, but united with the Messiah you are wise! We are weak, but you are strong; you are honored, but we are dishonored.
Till this very moment we go hungry and thirsty, we are dressed in rags, we are treated roughly, we have no house,
we exhaust ourselves working with our own hands for our living. When we are cursed, we keep on blessing; when we are persecuted, we go on putting up with it.
When slandered, we continue making our appeal. We are the world’s garbage, the scum of the earth — yes, right up till now!
I am not writing you this to make you feel ashamed, but, as my dear children, to confront you and get you to change.
For even if you have 10,000 trainers in connection with the Messiah, you do not have many fathers; for in connection with Jesus the Messiah it was I who became your father by means of the Good Message.
Therefore I urge you to imitate me.
This is why I have sent you Timothy, my beloved and trustworthy child in the Lord. He will remind you of the way of life I follow in union with Jesus the Messiah and teach everywhere in every congregation.
When I didn’t come to visit you, some of you became arrogant.
But I'm arriving soon, if the Lord wills; and I will take cognizance not of the talk of these arrogant people but of their power.
For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of words but of power.
Which do you prefer — should I come at you with a stick? or with love in a spirit of gentleness?

1 Let a man so reckon us as officers of Christ, and stewards of the secrets of God,
2 and as to the rest, it is required in the stewards that one may be found faithful,
3 and to me it is for a very little thing that by you I may be judged, or by man's day, but not even myself do I judge,
4 for of nothing to myself have I been conscious, but not in this have I been declared right -- and he who is discerning me is the Lord:
5 so, then, nothing before the time judge ye, till the Lord may come, who will both bring to light the hidden things of the darkness, and will manifest the counsels of the hearts, and then the praise shall come to each from God.
6 And these things, brethren, I did transfer to myself and to Apollos because of you, that in us ye may learn not to think above that which hath been written, that ye may not be puffed up one for one against the other,

8 Already ye are having been filled, already ye were rich, apart from us ye did reign, and I would also ye did reign, that we also with you may reign together,

20 for not in word is the reign of God, but in power?
21 what do ye wish? with a rod shall I come unto you, or in love, with a spirit also of meekness?
It's being reported that there is sexual sin among you, and it is sexual sin of a kind that is condemned even among pagans — a man is sleeping with his stepmother!
And you remain proud? Shouldn’t you rather have felt some remorse that would have led you to remove from your company the man engaging in such a thing?
For I myself, even though physically distant, I'm with you spiritually; and I have already judged the man who has done this as if I were present.
In the name of the Lord Jesus, when you are gathered, with me present spiritually and with power of our Lord Jesus among us,
hand over such an individual to Satan for his old nature to be destroyed, so that his spirit may be saved in the Day of the Lord.
Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know the saying, “It takes only a little yeast to leaven a whole batch of dough?”
Get rid of the old leaven, so that you can be a new batch of dough, because in reality you are unleavened. For our Passover lamb, the Messiah, has been sacrificed.
So let us celebrate the Seder not with leftover leaven --- that of wickedness and evil, but with the matzah of purity and truth.
In my earlier letter I wrote you not to associate with people who engage in sexual immorality.
I didn’t mean the sexually immoral people outside your community, or the greedy, or the thieves or the idol-worshippers — for then you would have to leave the world altogether!
No, what I wrote you was not to associate with anyone who is supposedly a believer but who also engages in sexual immorality, is greedy, worships idols, is abusive, gets drunk or steals. With such a person you shouldn’t even eat!
For what business is it of mine to judge outsiders? Isn’t it those who are part of the community that you should be judging?
God will judge those who are outside. Just eject the evildoer from among yourselves.

1 Whoredom is actually heard of among you, and such whoredom as is not even named among the nations -- as that one hath the wife of the father! --
2 and ye are having been puffed up, and did not rather mourn, that he may be removed out of the midst of you who did this work,
3 for I indeed, as being absent as to the body, and present as to the spirit, have already judged, as being present, him who so wrought this thing:
4 in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ -- ye being gathered together, also my spirit -- with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,
5 to deliver up such a one to the Adversary for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

11 and now, I did write to you not to keep company with [him], if any one, being named a brother, may be a whoremonger, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner -- with such a one not even to eat together;
12 for what have I also those without to judge? those within do ye not judge?
13 and those without God doth judge; and put ye away the evil from among yourselves.
How dare one of you (Christians) with a complaint against another go to court before pagan judges and not before God’s people?
Don’t you know that God’s people will eventually judge the world? If you are going to judge the world, are you incompetent to judge minor issues?
Don’t you know that we will judge angels, not to mention affairs of everyday life?
So if you require judgments about matters of everyday life, why do you put them in front of men who have no importance in the Messianic Community?
I say, shame on you! Can it be that there isn’t one person among you wise enough to be able to settle a dispute between brethren?
Instead, a brother brings a lawsuit against another brother, and judged by unbelievers!
Actually, if you are bringing lawsuits against each other, it is already a defeat for you. Why not rather remain wronged? Why not rather remain cheated?
Instead, you yourselves wrong and cheat; and you do it to your own brothers!
Don’t you know that unrighteous people will have no part in the Kingdom of God? Don’t delude yourselves — people who engage in sex before marriage, who worship idols, who engage in sex after marriage with someone other than their spouse, who engage in active or passive homosexuality,
who steal, are greedy, get drunk, insult people with contemptuous language, who steal — none of them will exist in the Kingdom of God.
Some of you used to engage in such things. But you have cleansed yourselves, you have been set apart for God, you have come to be counted righteous through the power of the Lord Jesus the Messiah and the Spirit of our God.
You say, “For me, everything is permitted” ---- Maybe, but not everything is helpful. “For me, everything is permitted” ---- Maybe, but as far as I am concerned, I am not going to let anything gain control over me.
“Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food”--- Maybe, but God will put an end to both of them. Anyhow, the body is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body.
God raised up the Lord, and he will raise us up too by His power.
Don’t you know that your bodies are parts of the Messiah? So, am I to take parts of the Messiah and make them portions of a prostitute? Heaven forbid!
Don’t you know that a man who joins himself to a prostitute becomes physically united with her? For the Scripture says, “The two will become one flesh."
but the person who is joined to the Lord is one spirit.
Run from sexual immorality! Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the fornicator sins against his own body.
Or don’t you know that your body is a temple for the Holy Spirit who lives within you, whom you received from God? The fact is, you don’t belong to yourselves;
for you were bought at a price. So use your bodies to glorify God.
