Water Dog wrote: If a woman is wearing purple pants at church, it usually carries a meaning. Not always. Could just be coincidence.

Again I'm just stating my own opinion here. Nothing more.

Purple pants on a woman at church have a meaning?!?!!! I am laughing my ass off over here.
Yes, I have stereotyped the hell out of this woman's appearance, but that doesn't make me a sexist.

Yes, actually, it does make you a sexist, WDog, exactly:
sex·ist: relating to or characterized by prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination, typically against women, on the basis of sex.

I'm beginning to think WS is having a little fun trolling. I mean really, purple pants????? Come on. There is an adult Mormon male who, with a straight face, is going to say: purple pants at church have a meaning?

If you can't be trusted to drink a beer or two without losing your mind, you probably shouldn't be deciding that you're gay just yet, much less shouting it from the social media rooftops. Just sayin.
Water Dog is announcing that he was unable to determine or act upon his sexual orientation until he was legally old enough to drink. Those proms must have been confusing.

You put me on the spot right when I was ready to bail. There were a lot of issues moving under the surface for me here and there still are. Primarily the thought that Savannah or Heather might find this thread and how they might feel about it. Sad to say, like it or not, it does represent the nature of the reality they face as a family.

And how would I want Savannah herself to see me engage.

For me, it begins and ends right there. I picture her looking over my shoulder as I post on this thread. That's everything.

Glad she made the call she did. I'm assuming she was wearing her meaningful purple church pants at the time.

She would get a very positive message from you. Thank you very much for that.

The black population in America is about 16-17%. By their influence, you would think it would be far more than that. What was it during the Civil War? About 14%.

What does this have to do with anything? In a hundred years, what will the gay population be in America? Look at all the struggles with the blacks. No wonder the LBGT community is terrified of the blatant discrimination going on by large segments of the American population.

Ryan O’Callaghan’s plan was always to play football and then, when his career was over, kill himself.

Growing up in Redding, Calif., he didn’t see any other option. From a deep red corner of a blue state, the conflicted young man had decided in high school that he would never — could never — live as a gay man. While the 6-foot-7, 330-pound offensive tackle didn’t fit any of the gay stereotypes, he decided shortly after coming out to himself in junior high school that he could never let anyone else in on his darkest secret.

Over the years he had heard general comments from friends and family members about gay people. Every utterance of a gay slur or a joke about gay men — and he heard them plenty when he was young — was like a knife to the gut.

"If you’re a gay kid and you hear someone you love say ‘fag,’ it makes you think that in their eyes you’re just a fag too," O’Callaghan told Outsports on a recent visit to Los Angeles for his first-ever Pride celebration. "That got to me a lot."

People often figure out what they are early on. I knew I liked girls when I was basically a child. To state that a Gay girl or boy can't understand what they are when they're 12-years-old is absurd.

by the way, I strongly encourage everyone to read the linked story. It's very insightful to what hiding in the closet does to kids who become adults. It's a great read.

Thanks for the link Doc, a good palate-cleanser for "purple pants have meaning" Water Dog's stereotypical approach.

Zip tie a bag over my head? WTF, my life is being threatened over here!

Believe me you have no idea how strong the urge was.

As I said in a previous post (I think) there were multiple issues moving under the surface here. One is how frustrated I feel when I see adults making comments regarding children that I know aren't necessarily based on knowledge but rather speculation. The frustration comes from the...

"These kids don't come with operator's manuals you know!"

Type thinking matched with my knowing that they indeed DO come with operator's manuals only the manuals are in the hands of professionals whose professional demands are so great that they cannot take time to devote themselves to parent education unless they are specifically tasked for that and who the heck is going to do that when parents often seem more willing to sign up for digital photography instead of a child development class at any given community college or university as an elective.

If I ruled the world, every expectant parent would be required by law to take a child development class (that's one semester folks) at the same time they are opting for childbirth classes, methods of feeding and by god, let's make sure that car seat is up to safety standards and not expired!

And if I really ruled the world of education, child development classes would be part of every high school (minimum, actually I'd go for intergenerational education at least Pre-K through 12) curriculum.

And I knew that if I took a certain road with you, you'd be at least receptive to hearing me out (and Savannah herself could read it) because (here's another issue) if you had met me face to face in real life you would have judged me by my appearance right up until the point where I sat down, opened my mouth and started teaching you. I guarantee it because...

"Oh she's so cute!"

Oh my god, she knows stuff.

^^ That's not arrogance talking. That's the voice of experience. ;-)

Water Dog wrote:What is your opinion of Michael Gurian?

I've corresponded with Gurian!

The Gurian Institute offered a seminar in my area university and I unfortunately couldn't make the schedule due to work commitment at the time.

I have at least one of his books regarding gender differences. The Wonder of Boys, I believe. I think highly of his work.

It was on account of his work that I developed approaches in my own demonstration classroom at a college lab school that were intended to meet the needs of boys and honor male role models in what we call "the feminized classroom".

Put anything you want on the table regarding Gurian and I'll engage it if you like. I really do need to go work on a project right now, but I'll return and take a look to see if you've got something for me on Gurian.
