So you never heard the word Pope and Priests in a derogatory way when you went through the Mormon temple? Amazing! Not many Popes in other religions.Res Ipsa wrote: ↑Wed Jul 03, 2024 5:36 pmHi Yellowstone. Neither of your examples call Catholics a cult. The temple ceremony prior to 1990. Bruce R. McKonkie's first addition of the Mormon Doctrine.
The ad hominem type fallacy used on this board towards anyone that doesn't support the current President like Mormon's support the prophet. The ad hominem type attacks on this board towards so-called right wing Supreme Court Justices who happen to be Catholic. The use of cult for those who would rather see Trump in as President than 4/12 more years of Biden.
It's a choice between two evils and to only believe in Biden and the rules of a silent group running him is a vote for democracy is in my opinion bizzare; If you don't vote the democratic ticket you are in a cult, a fascist, et. al.
The segment of the temple ceremony to which you refer was called "The Protestant Minister." When I went through the temple, it was clear to me that the role was a Protestant clergyman.
Given the diverse nature of American Catholicism, any claim that American Catholicism is a cult would be laughable. I can't think of an example where I've heard anyone make such a claim. I'm sure that somewhere there are people who have made such a claim, but I'd be shocked if we're talking about anything beyond a fringe opinion.

You are right. My emotions were high reading the constant ad hominem attacks on those who think Trump is a better choice. I could have written it better or not posted at all. I'm sorry.Dr. Shades wrote: ↑Wed Jul 03, 2024 5:44 pmIn other words, nobody in the USA refers to Catholic voters as a right-wing cult, contra your assertion.yellowstone123 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 03, 2024 4:26 pmhttps://socialism.com/fs-article/alabam ... -of-death/

Yellowstone, I have mixed reactions to your comments here. On the one hand I can see personal attacks as making communication and understanding more difficult. Calling this or that a cult ends up draining the word of importance or clarity.yellowstone123 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 03, 2024 4:26 pmhttps://socialism.com/fs-article/alabam ... -of-death/

I experience this with the frustration I feel hearing liberals called socialists, communists, and pinko, wanting to take freedom and religion away. On the left there are a few individuals who fit these attacks just as on the right there are a few actual fascists. Most of Americans do not fit these images on either extreme.
I certainly cannot see people following Biden like a Mormon prophet. He gets criticism. I think he has been a fairly good president whose age has become a problem. Run by mystery people? No leader of intelligence does not employ and need a good body of advisors and helpers. There are not exceptions to this. I could say no leader good or bad goes without a necessary crew of advisors and helpers.

I love history. The only classes I got an A plus in, one in eight grade and one night class at a community college. I don't really need to take credit for it because the teachers/instructors were so great, it was difficult not getting that grade.
As to Socialism and Communism, I think time and circumstances need to be taken into consideration. Today I'm fascinated with European history, well a lot of history; many interesting people in the 19th century in Europe. Golda Meir was born near Kiev, then traveled to Minsk for a time, then to America. She left America after WW1 to go to Palestine. She was a Social Zionist. It was in her blood. She wasn't a religious jew and was basically agnostic. In fact, the whole left that declared Independence for Israel were mostly from Poland, Belorussia, Ukraine, and Russia. I look at the area today and ask what happened. I'm reading a book on the early days of Dostoevsky and his stories and he's right in the thick of things in Europe. When people speak on socialism I immediately think of Golda Meir who was so passionate about it, so yes, McCarthy and his followers yelling communist to every person who doesn't support their view is indeed disturbing and in my book wrong.

Nope. I double checked by reviewing the script for the pre-1990 endowment. I need to correct one thing I said wrong; the section is called the sectarian minister. Maybe I missed it, but I didn’t see the word Pope. The only reference to Priest was positive, but I don’t think the reference was to Catholic Priests.yellowstone123 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 03, 2024 6:31 pmSo you never heard the word Pope and Priests in a derogatory way when you went through the Mormon temple? Ah, different section. Given the wording of the sentence, wouldn’t that mean that the ceremony also calls armies and navies religious cults?yellowstone123 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 03, 2024 9:26 pmGoogle, Mormon Temple, Satan, Popes, Priests.Res Ipsa wrote: ↑Wed Jul 03, 2024 9:19 pmNope. yellowstone, I can see your interest in history. I was not much interested in it when I was in college. That was short sighted of me. I became increasingly interested after college, however. I am glad as history gives perspective on who we are as people as well as being full of interesting stories.

Re: Why is the Supreme Court so mistrusted?
I've had this thought for a bit, but always remembered it out walking the dog, again just now, but at least I remember to actually type it out. Another problem with the current court is they have bent, ignored, or created things in their opinions about cases before them that don't fit the facts. In the case of 303 Creative LLC (gay marriage website Colorado case) she hadn't started designing websites before the case was filed, she hadn't received any requests from gay couples.
The next one is a real head scratcher. It is about the football coach, Kennedy v. Bremerton School District. The court said the prayers were short, private and personal. When the record shows he was doing it on the 50-yard line in front of everyone, kids were invited, and experienced peer pressure to join, etc. The entire case was moot cause Kennedy moved away anyway, and he didn't apply to be re-hired the next year.
Thankfully it does not overturn similar cases, one of which is Santa Fe Independent School District v. Doe. Which is about student led prayer in public schools. Though I know many Mormons celebrated Kennedy as though it did. Which is ironic cause Sante Fe ISC v. Doe was actually a Mormon and Catholic suing cause they were bullied cause they didn't pray the same way the majority Evangelical student body did. So it wasn't godless atheists trying to remove religion, it was other believers of Jesus Christ who felt their religious liberties were under attack.
