Ceeboo, I’m assuming you missed it, but the Head of Homeland Security gave a press conference on Monday. https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-roo ... y-15-2024/
Does this qualify as the representative of a government agency?

Re: Assassination Attempt - Secret Service - DEI
I don’t know, ceeboo. The Warren Commission was ultimately very unsatisfying. Having a press conference in which CYA is likely to be the order of the day is unlikely to be any more reassuring. It is nice to think that “heads will roll” when there are serious screw-ups, but realistically speaking the right heads rarely tilt, much less roll.ceeboo wrote: ↑Thu Jul 18, 2024 3:17 amHaving to have this very conversation - having to read all of the crazy suggestions about the event - having to guess - allowing the time and space for projection, insinuation, and innuendo to run wild - all of this is heavily rooted in the silence of the people that should be addressing the nation and it should have been done days ago.
Sincerely,
Entitled citizen.
And I do think there is wisdom in what Res Ipsa is saying. Like you, I tend to rankle at the apparent impunity granted society’s elites. That said, sacrificing lives to please the mob is no more a just solution than purging the ranks of the creme of society. We can have unreasonable expectations. People do, alas, make mistakes. They can appear on tv to beg your forgiveness or tender a resignation, but does that actually solve the problem?
The presence of assault weapons at right-wing gatherings is not remarkable. When “Second Amendment folk” have made noise about the right to have guns everywhere, I immediately wondered how that would make life more secure. This tragic event may provide a useful data point in that discussion.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rG6c8oZ4kE video showing him talking about getting his shoes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOaWdne5w6M video from behind the stage, you can see one shoe that had been knocked off his foot being pushed off the stage and see the lift fall out.
Trump got his shoes knocked off. Now a normal man wearing normal dress shoes that wouldn't happen, but if you have lifts in your shoes they effectively become slip-ons. Perhaps the Secret Service should focus less on DEI and instead focus on their protectees having adequate footwear so that they can do their job.

They could issue a comprehensive explanation for the breakdown in security today, and half the country will disbelieve it out of principal.honorentheos wrote: ↑Thu Jul 18, 2024 3:39 amMy impression: The breakdown in security is clearly a serious issue that the agencies involved are now attempting to avoid making worse by rushing public responses. It leaves open the legitimate question of how the limited transparency is better than being open given the proliferation of conspiracies and speculation.

They were interested in setting the expectations for millions of Americans who already feel aggrieved by the government and leveraging that into yet another grievance. Even if the SS held a news conference tomorrow, the same person will claim that the press conference wasn’t enough, demand something else, and leverage that into yet another grievance. That’s how grievance politics works.

Here’s an example I saw this morning that goes the other way. Donald Trump has released no medical information about the injury he received in the assassination attempt. Press briefings were held every day on Reagan’s health after Hinkley shot him. What is Trump hiding?canpakes wrote: ↑Thu Jul 18, 2024 1:51 pm.

Here is what Trump would do with this question: He would refuse to give the lying press any information and claim he was the champion of the people for not going along with them, when the entire point was to keep the people informed in the first place. You know, so they can make informed decisions.Res Ipsa wrote: ↑Thu Jul 18, 2024 3:54 pmHere’s an example I saw this morning that goes the other way. Re: Assassination Attempt - Secret Service - DEI
Perhaps the reason for the daily briefings about Reagan had something to do with a punctured lung, emergency surgery, and being in the hospital for almost two weeks. While Trump sent a tweet that he was okay that night, a very short hospital visit, and a public appearance a day later?Res Ipsa wrote: ↑Thu Jul 18, 2024 3:54 pmHere’s an example I saw this morning that goes the other way. Could that be a possible explanation that answers your attempt to compare the two events?
