Exactly MG, you shut down empathy before it has the chance to lead to sympathy or compromise, or anything but hardline obedience to your authority.

The point is, empathy isn't a slippery slope that leads to Armageddon, but this is the root of your reactionary doctrine. You want leaders without out it, in order to guard against the slippery slope. The result is things like mass child abuse that goes unaddressed.
On the Proposition 1 thread where do you think the empathy should be directed? The woman who chooses to terminate the life of an unborn child through an elective abortion...or the fetus which would otherwise have a chance for living among the rest of us humans?

I do agree that there should be empathy that leads to compromise. President Oaks recently taught/preached this at the National Cathedral.

Again, on the abortion issue that is being discussed on another thread, one might ask where the compromise might pan out at. I've provided a bit of my own thought on that.

It sounds to me as though you are a proponent of 'anything goes', just have empathy?

MG

This is fascinating. Mentalgymnast says the choice is between a living human being who is a woman, or a fetus that may or may not live "among the rest of us humans"?

Mg says there should be empathy that leads to compromise. Empathy for the already living human seems like a no brainer.

Unless the fact that the human is a woman is limiting mg's ability to have empathy. What are the odds?

Anyway, back to the topic.

MG, aside from the question-begging, (a zygote is a child), why would 35% of LDS say that we shouldn't have empathy for the unborn?

"Back to the topic" seems to be the latest 'go to' to avoid substantive arguments/replies to my posts.

Marcus, honestly, you really didn't say anything.

"No brainer"? Not to everyone. It's a bit arrogant of you to say that. Even dismissive.

You don't have a good argument do you?

I may have missed the source on this. Would you mind reposting it?

this poll dropped a couple of days ago and it's not unexpected but it's still interesting.

On one of the recent MG topics, I mentioned Joseph Smith was a sociopath, which I truly believe, and that senior leadership of the church tends toward sociopathology, which is evident in their stance to burn the kids to protect the club.
I don't think you've offered any substantial evidence of this at all. By the way, posting your stuff about empathy without actually giving the two statements that respondents were answering to was a bit, well, a bit deceitful.

It made a difference.

I think your point went right over mg's head.

Pilot was a no-nonsense administrator who was able to make the "hard decisions" and put down opinions before they got too loud by drastic means. Let severe punishment be a deterrent so we can keep the status quo with less work. In other words, Jesus is leading all these people like a captain guiding a ship to empower religious and political leaders who are much like man who ended him, if not worse, if you account for the times.
The Church today is administered in similar fashion. The edict to not criticise leaders, even if that criticism is true, springs to mind. One need only look at how the Church is going after Dehlin and the systemic and institutional covering up of child abuse, to see that protecting the institution is the number one priority. It’s not Jesus running the ship. Jesus was against institutional religion, and for good reason. He recognised that sociopaths would rise in any type of human organisations hierarchy. The Church is no exception.
Premise 1. Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable.
Premise 2. The best evidence for the Book of Mormon is eyewitness testimony.
Conclusion. Therefore, the best evidence for the Book of Mormon is notoriously unreliable.

Says the guy who is showing his butt on a message board.
I am unafraid of who I am. Religious people, conversely, are scared to death of who they are... and they should be. They signed up to suck.
Religion is for people whose existential fear is greater than their common sense. It's also the favored cover for hypocrites.

The god idea is popular with desperate people.
