I miss hiking on the PCT and around Lake Tahoe/Truckee. When I lived in Reno, we'd hike and camp all over that area. There was a cool little lake we'd go to near Sugar Bowl for day hikes and would camp there periodically.
Ha. We almost moved to Truckee! It was a toss up between where we moved and that town. I don’t want to assume you follow any of my hikes that I occasionally talk about, but we hiked the Tahoe rim trail in 2020. Tahoe is hands down one of the prettiest, most alluring places I’ve been to. In fact, my wife and I were planning our next camping trip here locally, and we talked about the night sky. If you ever get a chance, if you haven’t already, park at Big Meadow and hike in a few miles. And then get up at 1 or 2 in the morning and look up. It’s … a marvel.
eta: we hiked through some ski resort on the trt, but I don’t recall its name. From googling ‘Sugar Bowl Tahoe’ I’m envious. You must’ve had some really epic times up there.

I miss it. There's nothing like the mountain air. Also, the Tahoe Rim Trail was what we hiked the most since we lived close to Mr. Rose in Reno. Skiing and snowshoeing in the winter was awesome too. I think we went to Big Meadow once. We really stayed close to the north shore and the Incline Village/Mt. Rose area. You really don't have to go far to find some excellent areas to hike and camp.

That's a gorgeous area. I skied a few times at Sugar Bowl and did some hiking in the area. Saw the biggest rattlesnake I've ever seen on one of those hikes. Ugh.
he/him we all just have to live through it,
holding each other’s hands.
We’ve been more or less apartment—bound because of the AQI. We intended to do a day hike every day while waiting for our reno to wrap up, but that’s been put on hold until the smoke clears out. Neither one of us are very enthusiastic about walking around in an environment where visibility is at about 1/4-1/2 mile because of particulates. Perhaps when it dips below 70 again we’ll get out there again, otherwise we’ll stick to the gym when we feel the need to get some exercise.

No one should be out in that haze. Out in an air conditioned car, maybe. But not out-out pumping it into our bodies.

The air presumably cleared today so I went to Target. You can see the outline of mountain peaks covered in thick white haze. Apparently that constitutes a "moderate" rating. The store wasn't crowded and hardly anyone wore masks. Lots of empty space on the shelves. They still have the shields up at the check out and also the social distancing markers on the flooor.
Did some of my outside work yesterday, masked. Will do that again tomorrow. Painting projects and a garden that needs tending to.

We've got another heat dome moving in this week. Not as bad for us this time, but Portland is going to fry. I'm afraid to look at the wind direction forecast.

Best not to look. I prefer to be surprised. And nauseated. The haze literally makes me sick to my stomach.

Yeah. Same here.

Love the pic. I have some clients that would love to trim that "tomato" plant a little. They would even take away the trimmings without leaving a mess and would periodically return to do the same. LOL.

From Truckee and down towards Bridgeport/Yosemite, this is all such an amazing area, with so many spots to check out or use as a base for trekking up to and along the ridges. This is where I fell in love with both hiking, and aspens.
You’re right about the night skies. Super-clear, with the Milky Way spanning brightly across. You can see so many stars that it’s hard to pick out constellations from the mix.
We were lucky enough to catch that view at the GC north rim last week; we weren’t sure if we could dodge the smoke, but it seems to have dodged us, and the night skies were awesome. Yesterday I noticed that the AQI over Reno way was 263 at one point; I don’t imagine that much of anything could be seen at night, if you even were to dare to step outside into that smoke.
