Re: Vaccines and therapeutics
The point of this short video is apparently to make the point that in order to help keep children safe at school, it is useful to have a policy that masks should be worn in the school environment?Jersey Girl wrote: ↑Fri Aug 20, 2021 5:58 amYep. From The Lincoln Project.

Certainly makes sense to me. Masks markedly reduce the likelihood of an infected person in an enclosed space passing the virus to others in that space. And since we cannot at any given moment tell which of us might be carrying a viral load, we should wear masks to protect others, and they wear them to protect us.
So who would be against that, and why?

Re: Vaccines and therapeutics
I felt saddened to hear that John Dehlin has lost some donors over his support for the COVID vaccine. I imagine Dr. Peterson has experienced some flack on this issue as well.

Seeing donors withdraw over things like this shouldn't surprise me any more. How sad.

Re: Vaccines and therapeutics
Here's a good one from a few days ago; taken from data in mid-July.
(there appear to be some typos in the abstract; the 44.9% value is one)In log-linear regression models, a 10-percentage-point increase in vaccination coverage was associated with a 28.3% decrease in COVID-19 incidence (95% confidence interval, 16.8 - 39.7%), a 44.9 percent increase in the rate of COVID-19 hospitalization (95% CI, 28.8 - 61.0%), and a 16.6% decrease in COVID-19 hospitalizations per 100 cases (95% CI, 8.4 - 24.8%). Higher vaccination coverage is associated not only with significantly lower COVID-19 incidence, but also significantly less severe cases of the disease.
There are yet increasing returns to vaccination. Any dirty dogs out there still hesitant? Get yourselves to the vet and get your shots! Cleaning up is still a significant benefit to yourselves, your family, and your community. The estimated value of = –0.0449 in the top panel means
that a 10-percentage-point increase in vaccination coverage was associated with a 44.9%
decrease in COVID-19 hospital admission rates (95% CI, 28.8 – 61.0%)
Social distancing has likely already begun to flatten the curve...Continue to research good antivirals and vaccine candidates. Make everyone wear masks. -- J.D. Vance

The Food and Drug Administration is pushing to approve Pfizer-BioNTech’s two-dose Covid-19 vaccine on Monday, further expediting an earlier timeline for licensing the shot, according to people familiar with the agency’s planning.
Regulators were working to finish the process by Friday but were still working through a substantial amount of paperwork and negotiation with the company. The people familiar with the planning, who were not authorized to speak publicly about it, cautioned that the approval might slide beyond Monday if some components of the review need more time.
An F.D.A. spokeswoman declined to comment.
The agency had recently set an unofficial deadline for approval of around Labor Day.
The approval is expected to pave the way for a series of vaccination requirements by public and private organizations who were awaiting firmer regulatory backing before implementing mandates. Federal and state health officials are also hoping that an approved vaccine will draw interest from some Americans who have been hesitant to take one that was only authorized for emergency use, a phenomenon suggested by recent polling.
Some universities and hospitals are expected to mandate inoculation once a vaccine is fully approved. The Pentagon earlier this month said it plans to make Covid vaccinations mandatory for the country’s 1.3 million active-duty troops “no later” than the middle of next month, or sooner if the F.D.A. acts earlier.
Once it obtains the approval, Pfizer-BioNTech is planning to quickly ask the F.D.A. to approve a third dose as a booster shot. The Biden administration on Wednesday announced that fully vaccinated adults should prepare to get booster shots eight months after they received their second doses, beginning Sept. 20. Pfizer is expected to finish submitting data it says shows a third shot is safe and effective next week.
The F.D.A. last week updated its authorizations of Pfizer-BioNTech’s and Moderna’s vaccine to allow third doses for some immunocompromised people, a decision backed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Regulators are still reviewing Moderna’s application for full approval for its coronavirus vaccine, and a decision could come at least several weeks after the one for Pfizer-BioNTech.

There goes another one …
There goes another one …
A local Republican Party official in South Carolina died of COVID-19 Thursday, after spending nearly three weeks in the ICU during which he posted misinformation about vaccines and called coronavirus “a deadly bio-weapon.”
Both 64-year-old Pressley Stutts and his wife were rushed to the hospital with COVID-19 complications on August 1, according to the Greenville News. His wife was released earlier this month, but Stutts was moved to the intensive care unit.
On August 8, Stutts shared a picture of a nurse protesting against vaccine mandates and added: “Yes! Give a SHOUT OUT to those on the front lines. They place their lives in danger Every. Single. Day.”
While hospitalized, Stutts continued to dutifully post pro-Trump content, including posts about his belief that the election was stolen.
“Every day in ICU, they give me a cognitive test asking me various questions as to date, where am I, etc,” Stutts posted on August 4, along with a picture of himself and Trump. “They always ask who the President is and I keep telling them the President is STILL Donald J. Trump! Not going to let them fool me with that poser named Joe. Nosirree!”
When he was hospitalized, Stutts said COVID-19 “created double pneumonia in my lungs.” He falsely described the disease as “a deadly bio-weapon perpetrated upon the people of the world by enemies foreign, and perhaps domestic,” but stressed that he was against vaccine and mask mandates as “an ardent defender of Freedom and Liberty.”
Even after he was moved to the ICU, he continued to insist that he was against vaccine and mask mandates and shared anti-vaccine content on his Facebook. Stutts posted a quote attributed to British science fiction writer Ian Watson about what’s “in your best interest” which has spread throughout anti-vaxxer social media as a rallying cry against COVID-related mandates.
In his final post, on August 13, Stutts said he was “making a decision to go on a ventilator.” Lin Wood, the QAnon-promoting pro-Trump lawyer whom Stutts backed in his bid to become chair of the South Carolina Republican Party, claimed in a Telegram post two days later that the hospital was effectively killing Stutts and advised his followers to “avoid hospitals at all costs,” calling them “medical prisons.”

Greenville is the home of Bob Jones University. Just mentioning. Thank goodness my friends who attended BJU have all been fully vaccinated.canpakes wrote: ↑Sat Aug 21, 2021 1:53 am.
