The AFIB Chronicles: The Dreaded Night of the Gouda

So in my grocery delivery yesterday I got something new to try. I was searching up information on cheeses just for variety's sake. I was reminded of gouda cheese. So I looked up all the facts about it. Not much fat, pretty good protein, calories okay and learned that it's fermented and awesome for digestion. So I ate a small hunk late afternoon with crackers and strawberries on my plate. As soon as I ate a few small pieces my stomach started gurgling. Of course I thought, hey that's probably a sign of good digestion at work.

WRONG. REALLY WRONG.

Within the time I took to eat it all (15 minutes? I know I eat too fast) my stomach inflated like a hot air balloon to a degree that was so bad you couldn't miss it. Like you could SEE it. So bloating, then almost the worst heartburn I ever had and finally...AFIB.

The trifecta of total misery in my life! Pain, pain, plus crazy heart rhythm. Horrible!

Tried the stomach relief routine on youtube, then went straight to simethicone, gobbling down anti acids, pinches of baking soda in warm water and of course...vagal maneuvers. Nothing was touching it. Checked it on my phone really quick (because it stresses me out to look at it) and caught a high of 160 bpm. Told hubs I'd keep trying for a certain time and if nothing got fixed we needed to go to the ER.

So we ended up in the ER around 6 pm.

The ER was packed but they apparently triaged me ahead of other folks and got me in a room...not even the regular room where they usually do the shock. As they wheeled me through there I could see that every single room was occupied. The little room I got was I dunno what it was, but it had monitors and all of that so okay and then they wheeled in the shocker machine. That little room was packed with people including a med student. :)

Had to wait a good long while for them to get everything ready to go probably because it was so busy in there. Everyone was cool to me. Then finally they tell The Boy to stand outside, then propofol, see ya...wake up feeling brand new!

The doc wanted to try a different type of sedation but I told him, through his PA, I wanted to stay with what I knew...if it ain't broke don't fix it...and I knew what to expect from propofol and please use the dose I had in my records from the last 2 times last year because before that, one time it was too much and I stopped breathing. :o

The experience went really well and one weird thing...I woke up right away from the propofol able to make conversation and all. Hubs told me later that they said they tried just a bit lower dose this time so I guess that explains it. I'll check that in my records because it I was noticeably alert.

Anyway...tired today but good again!

Here's my "one good thing" that happened. When I was at the front desk this girl sort of yelled out "I love your hat!" I told her where I got it at a local grocery store called Safeway. She's like "Guuuurl, Safeway!?! anyway it's nice to get a compliment when you're in distress! :D Oh and one of the nurses said she loved having me as a patient because I knew what was wrong with me, had all the facts, and I'm very direct and clear about what I want or don't want (she probably heard me talking to the PA about the propofol), and someone (doctor?) told me "You're one tough lady". Maybe he meant because I had to wait so long for the shock while in AFIB/RVR the whole time and with 2 hours before that at home and I manage to ride it out without freaking out? So that's actually THREE good things I think!

I know I always say this but when things are going south...look for that one good thing. I'm sure you'll find it! You will! Someone will treat you well or kindly or some part of the circumstances will have been to your advantage and made things easier for you or it could even be a beautiful blue sky. Don't overlook the one good thing! It's there!

Very cool indeed. Good job Jersey Girl. Do you have a goal weight?
If I could manage it, I guess 110 lbs would be my max. It's slow going I can tell you that much! Imagine trying to actually gain weight. Unheard of in my life!
Aww. You are doing great :)

Thanks so much Nicky! <3

I looked back on my original Score thread and when I started it in 2016 I weighed 135. That doesn't sound like a lot to a normal size person but on my petite frame, it's a ton. I think my highest non-preggers weight ever was 145. When I look back on photos of myself from even 5 years ago (Facebook memories) I can't believe how chunky I really was and didn't realize it.

So anyway, that would be 8 years. I guess last year on account of the stomach stuff, that pushed off the pounds where I ended up around 90 lbs. I will say that at one point I saw 88 on the scale but it didn't last long.

I weighed 95.9 at the ER last night. Wrote about that on a different post above.

I'm probably going to ask to merge both Score threads. Seems like the right thing to do at this point. It's really me keeping a journal of my progress now and that is what the original Score thread was about. People talking about their health and fitness journey and sharing ideas and encouragement. :)

I don't really know how to visualise weight in lb. I'm just going by the progress you are making. I can visualise stone. I suppose I can Google a conversion. I do see that in the last few months, you sound like you are doing so much better than when I first came back, health wise.

How is your crafting going?

Pounds to stone.

So...I started out here:

90 lbs or 6.42 stone

And now I am here:

95.9 lbs or 6.85

Not to worry, Nicky. I can't visualize weight in stones either! Had to use a conversion tool to get the above equivalents!

Ahhhh ok. I can understand that. When I was underweight, I found that the more I worried about food the harder it was to gain weight. I started gaining weight when I started enjoying eating. I know that's hard when you need to be careful because food can set things off. But it sounds like you are doing really well. <3

Yeah that's the thing that foods (as I am adding them back) can trigger a ton of misery like what happened the other night. I feel pretty good that I've managed to gain some back.

You asked about crafts. The new things I'm doing are painted terra cotta clay flower pots with matching saucers using milk paint with a salt wash additive that makes a textured finish. Then applying decorative transfers and sealing with clear matte acrylic. They're really fun to do but pricey. They'll probably be the highest price items I make this year so am only putting maybe 6 in the show and see if anyone finds them enjoyable. The second thing that's new is fake candy/caramel apples using fake apples, paint, gloss mod podge, and fake nuts. They get a wooden stick in them and probably a simple bow. Also making snow cone ornaments using paper mache' cones, styrofoam ball for the head, still experimenting with the paint media on the head, and those will have glossy snowman eyes, carrot nose, and a scarf--maybe some other little doo-dad like a rusty star or snowflake. Not sure about pricing yet on any of these but when I get some examples done I might do a little thread (post pics) where anyone can share their art or craft projects and DIY. There's a lot of handy and talented folks down here in Paradise and I love seeing what people make!

Anyway other than the above right now...doing mostly the same things I did for the show last year that I know are popular. I know I'll probably come up with other new items but those three are what I'm trying out now. :)

Oh crap. Lost what I wrote.

Sounds like you are going to be busy. I love the sound of the candy apples.

...On July 4th I did make a sheet pan of roasted veg...potatoes, brussels sprouts, and sweet potatoes with olive oil only...
We do that every BBQ. So has some roll of BBQ-safe material that he lays down on the grill, like a cooking sheet. I like to add sweet peppers, mushrooms, various onion, eggplant and squash types also. And garlic slices. Then, season with whatever herbs the attendees prefer. It's always a huge hit. I could live on vegetables.
I <3 veggies too. Sounds delicious.

Jersey, please recap the list of foods you’ve determined that you must avoid.
